02a/j cable ends: improvement in design? work in progress

Been playing this morning doing a little turning. Pictures should tell the story.

Never been happy with the end interface on the cables, so thought a rose bearing may be more suitable
    to get the articulation necessary.

Could be an opportunity for someone to set up a CNC group buy type things.

Simply bearings supply the rose bearing < £5

Comments on my poor workmanship always laughed at. (I'm a leccy not a mechy...)

its a good idea, you can actually get off the shelf kits from americaland but DIY is always going to be cheaper and more satisfying :)

for my build I'll be using earlier type 02j ball joint type cable ends which attached to a modified 02a tower, using a polo 02j shifter. one day, when some of this mystical 'free time' becomes available that I hear people talk about

does it need the ball /swivel? i got the american ones with a bronze bush in em , make a nice difference and seem to do the job well

I think, yes. The tower moves up down/left right, the swivel is achieved by the rubber mount. I knocked some
nylon bushes up first with two tapers (concave looking in, both sides) but it was not a success. Just completed
both this morning and happy with the result

Nice work John. Neater looking than the Dieselgeeks job.

    Does it feel much sharper?

I use that type on all 4 of my old classics.
    WOLF R, JENVEE, WOLF CC (MK1 20vT) and Project 8 (V6 24v MK2).
The bush does make the gearbox have rod change like shift qualities IMO.

Jon... Out of courtesy, I'd like to say to you, that I'd like to copy that design.

No probs. Rose joint ID 8mm OD 16mm, 22.5mm to inner step (just 'snaps' into plastic) , step about 6mm deep (1/2 width of plastic carrier),
rest is obvious. Used 14mm end mill in tailstock to rough out bearing recess and bored out rest to 16. Used a ball end 14mm carbide
to radius the inside to allow the rose to swivel.
8BA nuts/bolts at 2.6mm clearance to clamp together
