My gear stick on my Anni (6 speed) won't self centre.
I changed the bush at the bottom of the great stick last year.
I hadn't driven my car for a couple of weeks when I noticed it wouldn't centre.

To try and fix this I replaced the cable end bushes this week with 42 draft design CNC bushes but it hasn't helped.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

There's a spring on the shifter that does the self-centering, probably broken.

My shifter was from a 6 speed 02M can see the spring on the left hand side of the lever here :

Mk1 Ford Focus has a similar spring that's prone for snapping, changed a few of those!

disconnect the cable ends from the tower, see if its a stick problem or if the tower is sticky. the bearings inside the 02a towers can fail i assume 02j/s/m are similar?

I had this on mine. It was the pivot point for the vertical movement on the tower itself. It had been left stood for a while and this pivot gummed up. Took it all apart, cleaned and greased it and put it back together. Back to as new!

But as Jonny says, disconnect the cables at the tower and see if it is the tower or the linkage.

Replaced the cable bushes and all was good with the gearstick. But when all back together there was no change.
So I have brought a new spring from VW (48p bargain!)

I have taken is apart so far but not sure how to get the pin out for the spring.

I've taken the clip off the end (1)
but how do I slide the bar out or remove the spring from (2) ?

    The spring looks ok?

I'd expect the 'legs' to be snapped off it.

Should have asked, is the lever stiff across the neutral gate (left/right) or 'floppy' and not springing back into the centre?

It's 'stiff' just sticks where you leave it

Have you disconnected the cables from the gearbox end and checked if the gear lever then feels normal?

When I put the new cable end bushes I had them disconnected, it moved ok and was centre I think!?!

With the cables disconnected from the gearbox if the lever springs back as it should, the fault is in the shift tower on the gearbox as mentioned above.

Thanks for your help gents... I will get on to that today.
Is the tower easy to take apart and check?

    Must be a cable issue.

I've not heard of the mk4 having trouble with the cables... maybe I will jack it up and see if I can get some white grease on 'something' to free it up?! [8(]

If the cables are disconnected from the tower an the shifter has been checked. Only leaves cables.
