This is my imported Golf Mk2 1.3. I have a few subtle changes to make, but I will keep you all updated. The interior is as good as new from the Golf million in 100. It’s complete standard, the original Brilliant Black paint is completely rust free and the shell is solid!
that is the catalytic converter. I imported it from Germany and there was no import tax! This due to the Brexit transition period. But buyers beware from January you will have to pay tax and because we left the EU I can only imagine it will be ridiculously expensive to buy anything in the EU once we have left. This car had one previous owner, the guy I dealt with (he spoke English) it was he’s grandad who actually owned the car and he worked at Wolfsburg VW! He bought it new in 1991 and retired in 2005. It has stack of paper work with original invoice if sale. Two original keys, always garaged and serviced to the extract date and miles each year done at VW. It came with a spare set rims which are the same as the ones on it but he had two sets one with winter tyre and one with summer tyres!
Very nice, was it easy to register it? Was speaking to a guy who got an audi A2 3L from Denmark few weeks ago, he said it was a piece of cake to do.
Don’t get me wrong. When I first looked into doing it I was getting in a right state and thinking I would do it wrong! So I found a few import companies that offer the full package, transportation as well as fully registering it on my behalf but cheapest I was quoted was 1800 quid! So I took a breath and did a little more homework and it’s actually very easy! It’s basically these steps •Find a car •pay deposit •arrange and pay for transport (I used a site called Shipley £560 door to door) •pay remaining cost of car the morning it is collected • inform HMRC (no import tax as in transition period) •fit RHD headlight and wire up RHD rear fog •stick MPH stickers on clocks •MOT it •Send MOT, you purchase receipt, TUV certificate and registration certificate along with two cheques one for £55 (registration fee) and another cheque for either 6 or 12 months tax. •get sent the V5 with the allocated registration plate •buy plates •ENJOY It cost me roughly £1350 all in to get it here, registered, MOT’d, taxed and number plates.
Sounds straightforward, and saved £500 to spend on stuff for it haha. Chap locally drove across Europe to get a classic mk1 mini cooper, good three grand cheaper than uk one he reckoned.
Great stuff! fantastic colour to. I've always liked this seat fabric although I usually associate it with the Jetta GLI Helios. £560 to ship seems a fantastic deal, there was a great thread on here many years ago when a guy (Chris?) imported a MK2 Jetta coupe in from Germany driving it back to the UK, IIRC bit of a mission with plates etc but a great adventure, I'd love to do something similar one day.
The car is completely original, one owner, full VW history 160000 miles, two keys....... take a guess at what you think I paid? as for driving it back. I was gonna go down that route however because of Covid19 I just didn’t think it was worth the risk. I was thinking of flying out driving back but i has to isolate for 14 after arriving I would she been screwed. Plus it would of put on more miles and it’s a headache applying for the temporary plates that the equivalent German DVLA have to issue you.
Well, I’m cheating a bit because I’ve looked at 1.3’s lately for my son, there’s one on Autotrader for £4500. I’m going to guess you paid around £1350 for the car too??
Close however it was a little more than that! Would of been happy to pay more but it was a steal either way. anyway got a chance to fit its new rear lights today and wired in the right side fog light along with laying the rear wiper flat. Gave it a much neater look (IMO)
I thought you might, since I had my guess on the price I’m seeing 5 doors at £4500+ so I think you got a bargain. Are you going to RHD it?
Nice Mk2 in fairness and nothing wrong with that big red Swedish tank in the background either - I'm convinced that in the event of a nuclear attack only big old Swedish barges would survive..
No I’m not converting it to RHD. I thinks it’s best kept as is for originality. As for the Swedish tank that car has done me very proud and that really was a steal!! Bought it from an elderly lady who lived on my road. It was her husband who sadly passed away she just wanted it gone and offered it to me. I felt bad so I gave her £500 fit it. It’s immaculate. Soon to be a museum piece lol
Well good on you for saving the Volvo - I do love those old Volvos they are (within reason) unbreakable
I would much rather drive/own cars that are 30 years old than any modern car. IMO they all look the same and don’t have much character. Even if my cars can be temperamental at times
