Mk3 gti 8v intermittent starting issues

My gti randomly wont start. Wait 5 minutes then it will start then may cut out while driving then starts again.

Anyway I took the fuel pipe off at the rail and had fuel under pressure squirt out.
Turned the ignition on, no fuel from pipe, cranked engine, again no fuel.
Waited a couple of minutes tried again then had a squirt of fuel with the ignition on then cranked it and had lots of fuel. Reconnected the pipe, engine starts.

Now it's not starting again. Prior to this I thought the pump was sounding noisier than usual.

I'm presuming the fuel pump is at fault here but is there anything else it could be?

Should note, when this fault first happened a few weeks back I changed the coil and crank sensor as a precaution as it's my mrs car)

    Hey I'm a new member,
My van did this but I had to wait 30-45mins for it to start,
Also I fitted a new starter motor and as I attempted to start car turn ignition off starter motor would continue to smoke with no noise maybe the relay as well.
Just fitted new 97gti8v motor to the van seems to run well now and I haven't changed the relays, let me know when you find the problem SOI can keep an eye on it with my car...

    Hello,
It ended up being the ecu relay. Apparently it's a common fault with them. Ordered a new one from heritage and has been fine since.
