Really interesting engines

Have been doing a bit of digging around an idea I have for a hillclimb single seater - basically a typical single seater tube chassis but fitted with a snowmobile 2-stroke engine and a CVT transmission (so no gear changes).

    Why you might ask?

    1. They could be the ideal powerplant to win the 600cc racing car class in sprints.
    2. I like em

2 strokes used to rule the 600cc racing car class when people used to use 500cc V4 motorbike engines, ultimately 'big bang' GP bike racing engines making about 200hp (like Mick Doohan and colleagues used to ride). They stopped being used because of availability, cost, emissions, and the fact that 600cc 4-strokes became available from modern sports bikes that were just as powerful, cheaper, and available from any bike scrapyard. Also, the 4-stroke was easier to drive as it has a wider power band. A modern 600cc sports bike like a Yamaha R6 makes about 130hp.

    So what's changed?

Bombardier make Ski-Doo snowmobiles, and have been beavering away in the background to produce direct-injection 2-strokes. These are very cool.

There are 2 high pressure fuel pumps (seen on the top of the cylinder heads) that inject the fuel directly into the cylinder at 500psi, rather than carbs as used previously. In 600cc parallel twin configuration, these engines make 120hp straight out of the box, weigh about as much as a teabag and are ultra reliable. I have read about a chap who has already extracted 200hp from one. These are very modern designs, and have a lot of potential IMO.

But the 2-stroke still has a very narrow power band compared with a 4-stroke. Thats where the CVT transmission comes in, as these can be tuned to operate right in the middle of the power band for maximum power to the road. There is a massive amount of knowledge in the snowmobile world about how to do this.

So I might start a new project this winter - have spoken with a couple of chassis designers who are very interested in the idea, and are currently trying to source a crashed snowmobile from Canada. We'll see how the plan comes together.

But back to the thread title - really interesting engines - the DI 2-stroke is my first offering, but check this out also - a V4 Aaen 2-stroke - 44kg (about as much as an 02A gearbox!) 275hp @ 10,000 rpm from only 1025cc.

What other interesting engines are out there?

RG500 Engine was an excellent 2 stroke engine 120bhp as standard

RGV500 Engine was 180bhp plus for GP500 Class.

    i had a RGV250 65BHP as standard.

i was at the strip the over weak and there was a 350YPVS Works engined Yamaha and that was 180bhp.

Most ineresting engine was the Norton RC588 Rotory

as a student, I went round the north circular one summer night on a friends RG500 suzuki - boy did that thing have a power band - very silly road bike as it was hard to ride

but times have moved on a lot, and modern 2-strokes are very different animals

another interesting engine to add to the mix - the Polimotor - a 2.3L version of the Ford BDA, used in several vehicles including a Lola racing car, that had a PLASTIC block.....320hp, and half the weight of the BDA

incredible, way ahead of its time (1982)
