Toyotec's how to repair your MK4 glovebox. **This works on all 1J chassis Bora/Jetta and Golf MK4. **Use the information at your own risk. It happened on a beautiful summer's day when the family was out in Windsor overlooking the Thames River. We got back to the car and reached in our glove box to obtain some goodies. Then snap! something broke inside preventing our lid from closing again. Not wanting our glovebox left open, as we use it as storage regularly, the stealers oops, dealers, were contacted. Our interior is beige and lid was in excess of 90. Thing is, if bought new, would it happen again? Well I had a close look at the lid and could see it was stuck togther against a plastic backing. And the one of the latches as seen in the picture, had dropped inside the lid. With nothing to loose I carefully pried the beige lid from the plastic backing. If pried off slowly and carefully the lid cover should look like this. This is what was revealed. The plastic lip, part of the backing, that keeps the white cam engaged to the latch, had worn out allowing the cam mechanism to jump out and dislodge the latch into the lid. Easy fix I thought. The solution was get two Golf MK2 door card screws, cut them down and screw into place. With this done some grip fill was pasted to the lid/backing and clamped for a few minutes, Job done! Cost to fix. Nothing! Time spent repairing 1.5 hrs (includes locating and preping components). Additional thanks to Matt Burgess of Kilburn Auto, for his suggestion to use "Gripfill" to stick the lid back together. To date the lid is still in one piece 7 months later.
Nice job. Gripfill is Strong enough to pull plaster from a wall when used to hold skirting. That will have trouble coming off.
I would of thought it would be fine, nice fix so much easier than swaping over the locking cylinder between boxes
