car sometimes judders at low speeds (usually when in high gear). also, it dad have a strng smell of fuel coming from the boot area, but that has dissapeared. and now its idling funny when you start it. i know i really need a vag-com check, but can't afford it (and don't wanna pay vw 50 squids for them to plug a computer in my car). i have a limited warranty on the car, but don't wanna claim on it until i know what is exactly wrong (don't wanna replace the wrong part). here are the possibles (suggested so far)... -coilpack -fuel pump (believe theres 2 pumps - a lifter and a main?) -cam sensor here's the test i've done... -sprayed water on the coilpack at night, no sparks. -opened the hatch in the boot to look for leakin fuel, didn't remove anything (wasn't sure how to depressurise the fuel lines), but it was very dry down there. whats do people think? or does anyone live in berks and have vag-com that i can borrow?
Just go through all the electrics, check all plugs/leads/ dizzy cap and rotor arm. Bound to be electrical!
Try the 48pin plug on the side of the head, open and close it a couple of times, as wet degridation can cause poor connections! Also look at the dissi cap and rotor arm for carbon build up and clean them. Could need new spark plugs.
Its doesnt have a dizzy cap or rotor arm. In my vast vw experiance you will see if the coilpack is fault by looking for a crack in the face of it (looks like resin). My bets on a hose on or near the throttle body. Have you lost any performance or done any recent mods?
The early vr have dissi caps, i think its 93 onwards when they changed to electronic distribution. Edited by: evozippy
it is a coil pack model...it was only the first few '92 models that were dizzy. the coil pack does look a bit cracked actually...i'm probably gonna have to get vag-com, it think it'll be the only way to sort it! '1990' - didn't you find somewhere that'll do a group buy on it? (check my post in misc tech q's)
the main bit of the coil pack looks fine, its just round the edge towards the front of the car it looks a little cracked (only a little though). i'll post pics later if a i can borrow a mtaes digi cam. another dumb question...how to i undo the big round wiring plug from the engine, so i can sparay it with wd40? (as suggested above somewhere)
damn, there was fluid in it (in the engine side of the plug). thats not normal is it...was kinda yellow colour. i've mopped it up best i could and sprayed WD in there. i also managed to snap a small plastic ring that goes round the outside of a rubber ring on the outside of the plug...don't think its critical, is it?
No, it took me ages to figure out how to get mine off a nd i broke a bit of it. The yellow stuff sounds like engine oil & water???? Dive it a damn good clean and see how you get on. Where do you live?
don't think it was oil. gave it a clean and sprayed it with WD40 to dissapste the water, but think i shorted out my speedo when i reconnected it. i live near reading, down south.
