Will see what they say but i was also wondering do you have to do it on the car or do i have to take it of
why i ask is because off the balance of the flywheel on car seems to me to be better

What are the downsides of lightening it? Are there any risks so dampening in the motor?

It depends on how far you go.
    And the application.

A really light one isn't nice on a road car, Jerky in traffic etc.
And one excessively lightened, especially by someone not competent, can break and turn into a missile.

Wasn't looking for excessive. Strictly rally car, so response desired over convenience. Also, the new motor is apart right now, so a good time to do it. I wondered if less mass would mess with harmonics in the crank. This is on a ABF clone in the States, basically an ABA flywheel. As shipping it to HotGolf from here might be excessive, and I have a lathe and some basic balancing equipment, are there some significant pitfalls in trying it myself?

If you can, I'd say go for. I've a couple of Hotgolf ones, the cars drive fine.
