Sorry was unsure where to start this thread but has anyone got any tips on registering an engine conversion? I have had a look on the government website but I'm not sure it is straight forward.
    Details taken from website:

Change of engine number or cylinder capacity (cc)
    You need to provide either:

    • a receipt for the replacement engine - I haven't got one and have the engine in my possession, can his be hand written for a second hand engine? I assume not.
    • written evidence from the manufacturer - I guess I'm not going to get written confirmation from VW.
    • an inspection report provided for insurance purposes - Who can carry this out? Any garage?
    • written confirmation on headed paper from a garage (if the change took place before you bought the vehicle) - It will get the change in my possession so I guess no good for me.
I am thinking I will have a garage do the work as I'm realistically never going to get time, could they carry out the works and then provide a report as per bullet point 3?

Can anyone who has done this please let me know what you did to achieve the swap and make it official.

    Thanks

shouldnt have to get them to do the actual work, but if they do it'll all be taken care of no problem. if you did the work yourself just have a word with local garages and mot places. they should be able to write up a letter for you once you drive it to them for inspection. this is something thats been around for years so they'll have had to do this loads of times already

If that cars original is a 1.8 8v/16v and it's getting a 1.8t 20v then just fill in the v5 with the new engine number and send it off. That's all I did with myn a few months back and the new v5 came back no problems.

However if your changing the capacity I think for road tax reasons it becomes more complicated.

What is the conversion your wanting to have done?

I know it may not be viable at moment, but have you spoken to dvla, really helpful in past I've always found, obviously current situation may be less staff to sort.
Or just try sending change of engine number, they will contact if a problem, have done with me before.

guess just depends on whoever has the rubber stamp on the day I guess. Tried to reduce the cc on my mk2 while I had the temp KR in after the 2.0 8v and they told me they needed proof. Bugger that says I, just left it till ABF went in and no problems

I was wondering the same thing to do with my swap. Been doing a vento abf build but with a view to going 1.8t. I got the donor car really cheap with good pedigree :)

Any recommendations for good specialist insurers?

If its still the same, change of engine either same cc or bigger it was no problem with the DVLA you just informed them its when you downsize in engine cc as you may be paying less tax that's why they want proof.
