I haven't posted up a dull question for a while so here is one for you to mull over this evening I have just bought a crack free replacement dashboard as our existing one is not crack free. The intention is to have the new one ready to go in as soon as the old is removed. I was going to make sure the windscreen vent channel was all nicely sealed up but it seems someone has already done it saving me a job However, where the rearmost two mounting/fixing bolts are the cardboard is still separated. I'd like to know if it is supposed to be or if I need to make efforts to seal it up. It will require quite a bit of force as the metal mounts are attached to it, unless I remove them and re-mount after the repair. I get the feeling it shouldn't be separated like that? Can anyone confirm please. As an aside this dash was very cheap as someone had previously tried to flock it. I took a chance on being able to clean it up and I am - bonus Can you guess which is before and after............
Good score on the dash Phil, no idea about the original question, but wouldn't think it should separate. Pva time. What are you cleaning up the outside with? Seems to work well.
As luck would have it, white spirit is softening the glue and then it's a case of elbow grease and then finished with Autoglym plastic trim polish/reviver stuff. Really surprised how well it's working.
Dashboard pretty much done now. The above gap at the forward mounting points was filled with araldite and some clampage added..... To this......... And the same for the other........ I then attended to the central air intake. It had delaminated in several areas so I soaked the relevant bits in superglue and clamped them to achieve this..... The superglue creates a solid edge suitable for sanding..... I then went round the whole thing and did the same to anywhere that was delaminated. For example, this....... to this....... The dash is now looking lovely and ready to fit......
Good shout on the superglue soakage idea Phil! Is the dash still out? If so, wrapping some soft edge foam tape in a loose spiral around the various wiring loom sections works wonders at making it quieter in there, same with the heater cables. It makes a handy foam gasket too for the heater vents. https://www.ebay.ie/itm/27274798317...=5338356710&toolid=10049&customid=101_130_288
Good tips, thanks Tristan. Dash is not out yet, saving that pleasure for a clear weekend with good weather.
I used some fluffy coroplast loom tape on all my interior harnesses, does a great job anti-rattle. used a bit under the switch surround on my cabrio as well as it rattled anoyingly
