Sorry if this is in the wrong place but I do not know the engine types by code.

    I have a 1.3e engine and 5 speed box.

How easy or not would it be to put this in a 1985 1.3 Polo breadvan?

its either the same code as the 1.3 polo engine or different but still a direct fit, plus possibly a little messing about depending on age of the polo and the engine you want to fit

    Hi John

The Polo is 85 with the earlier type engine the donor is from an 89 Golf.

Will the 5 speed work with the existing linkage or do I need a 5 speed linkage (long gone) and will the driveshafts mate up?

ok it'll drop right in on polo mounts, but you need a 5 speed mk2/mk2f (g40 shape) polo gearbox bracket or do some welding to make your own. think you also need a 5 speed or late mk2f anti roll bar to clear the 085 box from memory? driveshafts bolt straight up so thats easy peasy

gear linkage side you can either swap the 4 speed linkage over from the old 084 box to the new 085, or if you have it switch the end linkage bit off main shift rod from a 5 speed polo/golf 1/0-1/4 and keep the box bit on the 5 speed. the 5 speed one is a slightly better design but the old one will work ok. iirc you may have to bend a bit of the shift plate the gearstick fits in to let you get 5th

then to get it running you need to chop out the old white/purple resistance coil power wire and wire in a fresh ignition live from fusebox,. drop the mk2 spark module loom on top then jobs a goodun. wiring may need fiddling since on the golf spark module is in scuttle driver side, battery front passenger chassis leg and coil middle scuttle. polo battery in scuttle, coil on chassis leg and spark module nearby. thinking about it now prob be fine actually...

On another note does anyone know what this pipe should look like its out of the Polo engine.
Obviously broken but I need to know if it should be sealed at the end or open as it goes into a blind hole.
    Any help welcome

    Quick update
The Polo engine has come up trumps on a compression test at 140, 140, 139 and 132 psi so we will keep it as is at the moment.
We will go for 5 speed as my son had already sourced a gear linkage, 5 speed box mount and roll bar, at a later date.

The pipe is not available anywhere including VW.

I tested the pipe as is without the plugs in and turned it over on the battery and it kept a constant stream of oil onto the cam lobes so will go with it.

It sits right above the camshaft in three holes on the cam bearing housings.

The left hole gets fed oil from the front (no1) cam bearing and flows along to smaller pin holes to drip feed oil onto the lobes

We have an earlier engine with adjustable tappets on rocker posts

    Part number was 052 115 701
