Also interested in tips on removing rear glass - have removed a few windscreens before (with and without breaking the glass ;) ) but not attempted the rear yet and really don't want to break the original glass.

First thought is heat gun to (carefully) warm up the rubber, and get some soapy liquid in there for lube?

Dave I've got a spare boot here if you fancy coming over and having a 'dry run' together at some point?

I removed my old mk2 glass by starting in one corner and lifting the seal and exposing the edge of the glass, and carefully levering it up over the lip of the seal. Once you pop it out of the seal in one spot it's a case of gently repeating all the way round. The more you get out the easier it becomes.

I dont remember the technicalities of refitting as I was acting as the extra pair of hands but it involved two men, some washing up liquid, and some string. Make of that scenario what you will haha.

Buy a new seal and cut the old one. I think in is safer than out as you will have new supple rubber and no dirt and grime to contend with?

Already got some strimmer line to refit it, will look at rear rubber, might be best idea.
Figure start pushing from bottom, then as gets narrower towards top can move downwards if needed.

On the tv shows they always seem to cut the old seal and replace with new. Makes sense as you get to fit a new seal which won't be perished.

I've removed and reused the seal without issues.

Rear screen is easier than the windscreen. I've removed front and rear screens ... and I didn't break the rear glass [:v:]
If you've done front before you'll be fine with the back.

Was a few years ago now though and I had a mate who knew what they were doing help me.

Just don't rush and ease it out very gently.

With regards to cutting seals, bear in mind aftermarket seals may not be as good as 30-year-old original ones. I recently had a new windscreen fitted and also ordered a new seal. The fitter preferred to re-use the original seal. I personally wouldn't cut the seal now.

Having said cut the seal, the guys who did our screens when the car was resprayed used the original seals (we did fit a new front screen).

Best to have someone inside the car to help release the rubber by carefully pushing outwards on the glass as the person on the outside carefully peal the rubber back using a soft plastic tool ,I used a plastic epoxy mixer tool which was perfect.
Be aware using strimmer line can be tricky and could cut the old seal,I always use soft nylon cord which is 5mm,I once cut a NOS rear screen rubber on my 67 Beetle with thin cord.
Because the rear Golf window is flat there is much less chance of breakage than a windscreen, good luck mate.

I removed them at least 3 times by putting foot in top corner and apply a constant hard pressure while someone manipulated rubber very easy.
