Hi everyone, mk2 golf16v 91. What spline do I need for disconnecting the drive shaft from the gearbox? Any recommendations for supplier as some have a longer shaft than others and the cv boot can obstruct. Cheers Matt

If I recall correctly the splines bit is a 6mm. Buy a set and get a decent make as it makes a big difference to the quality.
Regardless of which spline bits you get you will need to rotate the shaft to get to them as you go.

Thank you. My engine is basically bare so is this loosening of the spline bolts best done underneath the car or can it be done from inside the bay - I can actually step over the cross member into the engine bay

the bit is called XZN M8, longer version is better.
I found the best way to loosen these bolts is using 1/2 extension bars and working from side (wheel well).

Any way you can access the bolts basically. I know @dodgy uses a 1m extension and does it from the wheel well. I prefer under the car so I can see more easily what I’m doing.

Yep long 3/8" extension bar, long handle ratchet, the long m8 bit, go from under the wheel arch and rotate the the shaft as you go, I find best method is scrape all the crud out of the end of the bolt and tap the bit in with a hammer to ensure its fully seated.
