I just ripped my exhaust off by accident, and lookin in the haynes manual, it says the 'C' clamp wjich holds the downpipe to the manifold can only b fitted with special tools or dealer. Is this true or can it b done without it? (Its a MK2 golf 1.8 driver)

You can bodge it, quite a lot of posts here on it. Basically stretch it over a long bolt, put in place and knock the bolt out. Try the search, it's been covered in more detail. Or ask Andy947, I think he did a post on it.

what I did (following a tip on here) was fit a D clamp (exhaust clamp from Halfords) inside the C clamp (with the bar on the outside of the nuts) and expand the clamp that way. fatherless child of a job. I actually have a tool which is supposed to do it but the D clamp was easier by far
its worth replacing the seal and clamps whilst the exhausts off
