I've been thinking it would be nice to extend my gear shifter in the car closer to me. Obviously extending the shifter vertically inside the car will extend the throw of the gearknob which isn't what I'm after.

I already have a 'short shifter' which replaces the selector rod.

Looking at different options available I have seen it mentioned on another forum you can extend the "shift lever" (pictured below)

But I have never seen or heard of anyone actually doing it. As I understand it, it involves cutting off the original and welding a small extension in.
I cant work out which bit would need extending and actually weather it would have any adverse effects on syncros etc.

    It seems Neuspeed make one:

Has anyone had any experience with trying this?

If you extend either part of that piece of the gear shift you'll end up with a LONGER throw. The vertical lever and the short ball and socket one are 2 separate planes, one back/forward, the other left to right.

You need to bring the top hole down, and the lever on the gearbox needs to be extended.

If you rush the shift it makes them work harder which can escalate wear.

Thought that might be the case. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a spare lever and bust out the grinder.

probably dont need to cut or weld anything, just need to bend the lever on the box to more of a right angle shape. needs a bit of leverage mind  it will move the top hole a bit further back, but if you have a proper ball end link kit can flip it to the other side if it goes too far out. Heres the one on my 2Y box, can see its been welded but I recon if you bent it to the same shape it would be fine:

If you made the relay rod longer as well as bending the lever on the box you will probably come into problems with the rod angle on the OEM rod, see this pic here to show what I mean

IIRC I flipped the MK3 weighted rod underneath to fix angle issues way back before I put a full metal rod kit on it, then when I put the kit on I flipped the ball round the front:

above piccy also shows the simple short shift kit I had on the relay shaft. for yours could do something similar but hole 1 end for the bush/ball joint, and a slot on the other for adjustibility rather than 2 holes for short, and shorter if you get me .

on a side note I found the longest hole on the relay shaft was waaaay too short for my liking, so that might be enough for you without even having to touch the gearbox end

Pretty much what the cog master Martin was saying .
I remember discussing similar with him when I ran the 020 in JENVEE.
Very important if you extended the shifter.

I would also suggest to copiedge the get one of Mart's metal ball linkage kits

The funny thing is that lever in the picture is from the box that came in my GTI when I bought it, but the box was so completely worn out inside I didnt even notice it had a short shifter. I only realised after the replacement 2Y went in (it didnt come with a rod lever attached) I noticed it felt a lot shorter than was usual for a mk2. I looked a bit closer then I spotted it had been messed with

I already have the extended the relay shaft which is great for the stock shifter length. But if I want to extended the stock shifter length closer (vertically) to the driver I'll need a shorter shifter still to eliminate the extra leverage. I think its worth a play around, will report back

This has been much help, cheers lads :)

    Mart = hotgolf = Gas n Gears.

I tend to be a bit quiet on my own developments these days. It was 3 years ago, I beta tested Mart's gear linkage kit on my own Golf MK2 16v, which ran a gearbox looked after by Mart.

As you should be aware I do drive this car on track days and cover very large mileage with it as a 'daily driver'. This give very good feedback for those, who's components are fitted to the car.

Felt lovely in comparison to others/beforehand.
