I am changing my 02j for one with an LSD , but the tower is different on the new one . Current has ball and socket type https://i.ibb.co/KjTW6G9/DSC-0322.jpg The new one has the pin type https://i.ibb.co/wNx3jsD/DSC-0324.jpg Are the towers a direct swap? save me changing cable ends etc .
They are but if you're really unlucky the base diameter is different where the bolt in support goes under the box the (VW emblem bolt in part) I know thats the case with 02A's anyway....
VW swapped and changed for no good reason. Some later items are 15mm, some are 16mm. Just swap the levers on the top
I wanted to keep my own for the reversing light switch , the one with the pin type has the switch location filled with chemical metal .
2nd pic looks quite interesting. looking at it seems to have a mk3 golf 02a gear selector lever fitted upside down with the slotted hole bit where the 02a cable used to fit cut off? anyway worst case you can swap the old upper alloy casting piece over to the new gearbox if the complete assembly doesn't swap over for whatever reason
Dunno Jon , it has a Diesel Geek stamp on it, I bought the box from Sparrow / Alex out of his track car .
looks like a early one from them then, the current kits are fully billet machined. I'd be interested in that there bush its got if you're not going to be using...
not a lot to it really. undo the 2 bolts put it in neutral and pull out the tower, might be stiff but it will come out eventually. If its an early 02A box the lower bearing is smaller as mentioned, that comes out with 2 bolts underneath and swap. You'll loose oil, but if you tip it upright a bit it'll be minimal. make sure all the other holes are filled before you do that and watch out for the open shifter tower hole
