    Cheers brookster.

My question was going to be how easy is it to fit a 1.8 20v N/A engine into my mk1?

I see they are only 125bhp compared to the 1.8 16v with a 139bhp but they must have more tuning options and rev better.

What kind of power is the above mk1 kicking out..Who does that car belong too?

My mate is breaking his 1.8 20v car and has offered me the engine for mucho cheapo....

If it's a 20v n/a engine from a Golf, it's not going to be a straight swap. You can use the head, but the block is wrong. If it's out of a different VW, you might be ok.

Check the engine code. There are 2 block designs - external water pump or internal:

For a Mk1 conversion, you need an old-style external water pump block, which has the right drillings to take the OSF Mk1 engine mount.

This is an AEB 1.8T, water pump bottom left:

Ignoring this being a DX engine (Mk1 GTI engine, 1800) these are the tappings you need, an they'll be the same as the engine previously in your car:

They didn't change for 25 years, until the water pumps went internal.

The engine Brooky has shown is a pretty rare alloy-blocked ALT engine.

Cheers Chris. It is out of a golf. I will give it a miss.

If I wanted to do this would it be better to get the engine from say something like a passat?

I take it thats his mk1?

    It's 20vkid's Mk1.

Indeed, Passats are a common source - all on that list.

pretty easy, mounts are available to fit the 20v's in to the mk1 with ease.

As in mounts to fit the internal water pump engines?

as in the ones used in the turbo conversions.

Seen a thread somewhere on the net where someone used these on a NA lump. unless it was a mix and match of parts?

Mix: Passat block, ADR head IIRC.

I've not seen someone put an internal water pump engine in a Mk1, but I don't doubt it can be done by a skilled fabricator. The Mk4 20v n/a Kit Car had a Mk1-style chassis engine mount, but I've not seen anyone producing them for sale. Be interesting if there are

It is an easy enough mount to fabricate. I have a template cut out that picks up on 3 bolts on the timing belt end of the block. There are a couple of bolt holes on the rear of the block to tie in with this plate too.
I held off welding on the std mk1 mount donut as I am considering moving the engine over to the near side a little as the 06X engine is longer at the pulley end, because of the chain driving the oil pump.
Works out well for a wide track conversion using a pair of OEM VAG shafts too. ;)

I have been reading about using a 2l 16v bottom end with the 20v head....

Has anyone heard of this? Apparently it is done by machining the pistons? If this can been done it would be good as I have a 2l16v bottom end.

AUM, AGU, AUQ are all 06A engines are very popular with the MK1 boys. This issue is the front mount bracket.
Bens Cab has such an engine in his cabby. Custom bracket required for front engine mount and the auto cambelt tensioner is junked for 16v version with a spacer.
I see conversions like these weekly.

Are these custom front brackets (offside inner wing I assume) sold, or all self fabricated?
