What about spark plugs? Might be worth taking all 4 out to check their condition.

Post a pic up on here :)

ok heres a pic of my nearly new plugs[:s]

just a note i used a little bit of grease on each thread putting them in, but is it me or are they in pretty shocking condition?

bearing in mind i have been playing around with mixture settings etc so
i suppose that will explain a little of the carbon on them.....what do
    you reckon about them guys????

Thoughts, though I haven't read responses in detail.

    * Check fuel pump cranking fuel through ok

    * Get top off carb - clean inside. Consider whether the float needle valve is sticking

    * Take bolt out of lower right hand side of carb (bolt on outside). Remove main jet my inserting screwdriver through hole into float chamber. Check it's clear.

    * Other thought: are your points in OK condition. They cause h3ll when they play up.

You are definiely having problems with fuel, not sparks.

Kieran, I've got a fuel pump which you're welcome to have for the price of
postage. Failing that I've got an entire carb off a 45k mile car. Just drop
    me a PM.

chris ive completely stripped the carb and cleaned out all of the jets and float chamber

ive not checked fuel pump is cranking through properly, how do i go
about this? although the car will run fine for a few miles before
    it starts playing up

did you have a look at the spark plugs picture, one of them looks oily,
do u think maybe i have a headgasket or piston ring problem???

thank you greg that would be a great help

could be something really basic, on my old 1600, the flap for the hotaircontrolled by the vacuum had rusted and stuck shut, so never opened. worth a check!

Are you definitely happy the needle valve is OK??

Take the feed pipe (from the fuel pump to the carb) off the carb, and put it into a bottle/container. Then crank engine over. If it fills the bottle, then great. Should be ok. Even better if you can try this test immediately after it breaks down - I had a pump that would intermittently fail. The clue is that the pump is leaking (engine) oil from the small hole in the fuel pump casing, indicating that the diaphragn is on the way out.

Alternative suggestion is that the tank is full of crap and the guage at the bottom of the tank pick up pipe is getting blocked. Get to this under the rear seat. It's a twist-off pain in the neck to get off. Use a hammer onto a long piece of wood and bang anti clockwise by about a quarter of a turn.

Like Chris says test it immediately after the car dies. This is exactly what happened on my dads 1.3 it would just cut out randomly. The AA bloke took the hose off the carb and got me dad to crank it over, got nothing for a few seconds then fuel started coming though. Once he connected it back up the car fired up straight away!
