Nope, it does'nt quite work in that way (top marks for giving it some logical thought), the requiremnts wont go up by much as the air being processed through the head wont change a lot. If it's ok now, just go up one size and try that, though a visit to a rolling road will be required which my see a different requirement, all depends on how close to correct it is now.
ok thanks for letting me know my "calculations" were wrong ill get it running tomorrow or tuesday hopefully ........ 1 quick question, could i run the MK3 alternator on the mk3 bottom end, without it hitting the crossmember? cheers..
when i came to put the engine in, it was too wide, becuase i was using the mk3 pulleys and alternator... ... so , i ground off the PAS part of the pulley as i wont need it, and ive given the chassis leg abit of a wack i still havent tried to fit it as it got dark!.. but ill do it monday... also, im not sure if the crossmember would hit the alternator ??
You want to unbolt that bit of PAS pulley - the crank pulley is normally in two parts, although it's not obvious looking at it. Just put it back in with shorter bolts, if the existing ones are too long. Grinding bits off will create some imbalance in the crank and might shorten the life of your engine, although you might get away with it. Other people are running Mk3 alternators in Mk2 cars - I'm fairly sure Rubjonny has done it for a start.
oh, so i could take the PAS pulley bit off.... is it like, one inside the other sort of thing? would a claw hammer get it off? and thats good to know that i should get away with the mk3 alternator.. thanks mike..
Yeah. It might take a bit of levering, but they're normally separate parts, which are a fairly close fit, and then held together by the bolts.
oh right, ill deffinatly give that a go tomorrow!! also, should i expect all sorts of crap coming out of that breather on the front of the block? cheers
thatnks alot mike!.. it came straight off, it wasnt even that hard. .. weird why it didnt come off when i dropped it on the floor haha.. i have got my engine in, after alot of messing around with the exhaust tunnel!.. got the front bumper on which was also a mission.. i felt like crying and tomorrow im going to link everything back up, and hope to god it will run... ill post some pics up soon..
right, i have had my car running tonight at around 9pm. and went round the block!.. then as soon as i stopped it to alter the dizzie timing (as it was pinking up hill when engine was under load) , i retarded it alittle.. then all of a sudden i couldnt get it started again... when it pops back through the carb, does it mean its too retarded, or too advanced? i forgot also, my facet pump, when i run it at 3.5psi (as suggested,) it leaks from the fuel regulater, but the pipe is tight also it aplutters alittle i think... it ran better at 2.5psi... anyways.. any help to the questions floating around in this message would be agreat help[:d] EDIT: What sort of advance (degrees) would i need on the vac advance at idle?
havent got a timing gun! (ATM) so im going to have a play with the ignition timing.. advance is it, clockwise, or anti clockwise on the 2E bottom end? cheers
in that case i would loosen the bolt and turn it untill it sounds nice and smooth then try it, if it pinks keep retatrding it until it doesnt, you wont be far away....... says the man that had his timing at 18deg instead of 6 last time he built a 2e/pb
hello bud, right ive had it running sweet... but then kept konking out becasue my rotor arm is knackered..] oh.. 1 BIG problem! im running mk3 altenator ok, and as ive found out, it doesnt seem to charge! My battery went dead! i noticed there is a connector on a black wire which comes off the alternator.. and this was left unplugged.. i was told to connect it to a small wire which hangs around near the battery tray.... this didnt work either.. can anyone shed some light on this for me??
Well the alternator needs a permanent live to it, and it also needs to be earthed. If you have these it should work.
the little wire is also essential, do you know if the alternator was any good or not? they have a habit of just stopping working whilst your changing engines
yeah i need to know exactly why that wire is essential.. and no, i havent tested it yet, im doing that today.. does anyone know if the 2.0 bottom end on a dizzy with the adaptor ring shoulld make a clicking sound? i thought it was pinking, but i altered thee timing on the dizzy and ther was no change.... is it just the bottom end? are they ment to make a slight clicking soud from the bottom end... sorry for lack of description, i dont know how to explain it... all i know is my 18700 never did it
ahh right, thanks for that matey! ill retard it some more later as i think it was advanced quite alot.. cheers
If the little wire to the alternator is not connected then the alternator wont charge. Is the battery dash light on? it should be if that wire aint on. I had a similar problem with a laguna i had, that wire had come off and i got a flat battery!
