After wanting a MK1 for years and needing a project to keep me off the streets i managed to pick up a 3dr 1.1 C as the starting point (5 years ago!) It was complete but had been partly stripped for paint. Hear she is [/IMG] [/IMG] Looks a bit sad! The plan was just a clean up, cheap respray bigger engine and go and have some fun! As a lot of projects do it got a little out of hand! After a very slow start and picking up some replacement panels it was finally started. I replaced lower half of back panel, outer sills and rear arches. All was a learning curve having never done any car bodywork before. [/IMG] [/IMG] It then stayed like this for about 18 months due to working in the US. On my return after spending too much time reading build threads Chris's, Reeves MK1 and Gurds ( yes im blaming you guys) it became a bigger job!
Rear beam, fuel tank and any areas that looked a little crusty got sorted [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG]
Weight saving [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] Crusty seam sealer removed from the bay to make sure no rust was hiding, ended up cutting the scuttle out too. [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG]
Decided to do away with the messy brake set up, bell cranks rods etc never good for better brakes. Got a good deal on an OPB set up. Welded up all the holes in the bulkhead. [/IMG] Inner wings cleaned of underseal / stone chip. Steering rack mounts seam welded and brace added (20x20 angle iron) [/IMG] All old brackets and rear seat belt mounts removed. I had been putting this repair off but with a spot weld drill it was straight forward. [/IMG] [/IMG]
Brake upgrades, Home brew caliper spacers and G60 disks, Compbrake topmounts and less than ideal FK Highsports, these will be upgraded when funds allow but for now i have them and they are going on. [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] Other bit and bobs added. Just to add most of the parts are the original items cleaned and painted, most of the other stuff is e bay bargains etc Buying a couple of parts each month you soon have a room full of stuff! [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG]
Still needed to sort an engine and box, got offered a complete but rotten MK2 16v, removed the engine and box along with other bits that may come in handy and sold the rest to fund other project parts. Ended up getting my money back and a bit extra. Engine was going to remain standard to keep costs down as i still had the rest of the car to build! Block was very worn, so managed to get another from Brookster, complete with pistons and crank. Block was cleaned and painted. [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] Bolt on parts cleaned and painted. [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG]
Cylinder head rebuild, needed a couple of valves. [/IMG] [/IMG] Engine put back together using all new seals and bearings. rods from the original KR were used. [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] Dubpower 16v manifold. Present off my GF last Xmas [/IMG]
Gearbox rebuilt using new bearings, seals gaskets and the all important diff bolts. Peloquin 80% diff kit fitted also. Very pleased how the box turned out [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG]
Inner wings seam sealed primed and stone chipped. [/IMG] [/IMG] Smith and Deakin bonnet and wings offered up and Aero catches fitted. [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG]
Seat rails and spreader plates welded in. (home brew) [/IMG] The spare wheel well had seen better days so rather than do away with it all together it now fitts a space saver. [/IMG] Second hand but new Safety Devices cage fitted, mounts welded etc. [/IMG] [/IMG]
Carb manifold and carbs. Carbs rebuilt and jetted - The good thing about taking so long to build a car is you get chance to understand each little bit in detail. Was going to get a pro to do the carb rebuild but in the end spent 10 on a book [/IMG] ABF top hose outlet if anyone is interested, i did try and chop and weld a KR one but that did not go so well ! lol [/IMG] [/IMG]
Various bit stripped and painted. All painted with Poundland 1 cans of primer and topcoat [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] Laminx added to the rear lights. (just reverse and indicator section) Very impressed with the product looks much better in real life. One with one without. [/IMG]
Off to the body shop! This day was a long time coming! The only reason most of the detailed parts got done was because i was saving for paint! Inside and bay primed and whole car flatted. [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG]
Bodyshop pics. (Painted at Chase automotive Cannock) [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG]
Inside painted! It looked very red in the spray booth! [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] Very pleased with the inner roof because i hated removing all the crud and glue and hated preping and priming it even more! I think it was worth it [/IMG] [/IMG]
