256mm brakes for an early 16v?

    Will I notice a big difference when driving in a spirited manner if I convert my restored-for-the-road '(but with a Quaife LSD) 1987 16v to 256mm brakes? or are the standard ones good enough? TIA.

    Most definitely.
    I changed my 239s for 256 in less than a week after I got my mk2.
    I've swapped a few from 239s to 256 and it's a very noticeable difference.
    And once you've gone to 256, 280 is a simple and cheap upgrade from there.

    Another overlooked benefit of the bigger brakes is that you can run standard pads, discs, and hoses and still get the stopping power of upgraded 239 stuff, that require special pads, braided hoses and uprated discs.


    Another good upgrade is the larger, later 16v master cylinder too, gives a better pedal.

    14 inch VW rims still fit over 256, 15s over 280.

    Thank you. The subsequent 280 upgrade being easier as the correct hubs are on the car by then, I suppose.

    Exactly. I did precisely that on my own car after a year with 16v brakes.

    Wolf R was originally on 239 mm brakes.
    Swapped over the hubs to Corrado/Passat 16v jobs shortly after getting it. The rest was history as they say.

    This may seem a simple straight forward question, but I'm going to ask, as I haven't done this conversion before.
    I have two of my racer type cars I need to downgrade to 256mm (from 280 and 300mm) discs/calipers
    so I can them on 14's.
    Both have G60 hubs (mk2 golf and Ibiza)
    I have the discs, no name, auto factors type.
    Which caliper and carrier and pads will I need?
    I have tonnes of 239mm stuff, loads of uprated G60 and 239mm pads and spare G60 calipers, but suspect I need mk2 16v caliper/carrier stuff
    Help appreciated, willing to buy bits or advise on sourcing etc

    Calipers should work Jon, the 16v and G60 are almost identical. Iirc the G60 has the short steel pipe onto the caliper that the flexi attaches to.
    I run 16v calipers on my 280 carriers. With narrow pads. So on that reckoning, you can mix and match 16v and G60 bits. The thing is the pad shape, clamping area, and caliper bolt spacing remains the same

    Adds to the driving experience!

    I’m fitting 256’s to my early car before I get my wheels turned into 16” splits, 280’s won’t fit under 14” wheels
