The ghetto solution to your problem would be stick a piece of card
about half the size of your rad in front of the rad itself. That should
get your system temp up. ;)

Plain bullshit, mate. Now I know why you are an "ex" mechanic.
How about you find a single source to corroborate your radical new explanation of how a cooling system works? Shouldn't be hard, I mean there is plenty of info out there on the net.......

ok more info just been out in it i drove 10 miles in 15 minutes the oil hit 84 degrees and then stayed there before going back to 80 - 78 - 80, the water went to a lttle over quarter on the gauge.

when i got back i left it running until the fan came in bywhich time the oil was @ 76 according to mfa and the water was just on the half way mark.

Could it be an earth fault on the instruments?

Unlikely, vMFA wouldn't really react like that to an earth fault, although the temp gauge might if you had a faulty voltage regulator.....

sorry to butt in in the welcoming conversations at the moment  , have you got an induction kit on ? [:s] .
its just that when I fitted mine it changed the temp' a bit when on a run etc, im not trying to suggest its just that (if you have one), just might be a contributing factor [:s] [:$] [:D]

Sorry to butt in guys, but i have a very similar problem.

Unless my gti is stuck in traffic the temp guage never goes out of the white area. I can go 15 miles to work on a steady run and it won`t go out of the white zone.
Also the oil temp sits abot 70 c. If i take the motorway i can get the oil temp up but not the water!

Think its a thermostat problem. Problem is one of the bolts is rounded off!

Also would this cold running have an effect on fuel consumption? Because at the moment it`s shocking!

    Good forum by the way,

    Cheers Richard

it will affect fuel consumption as it thinks its still cold and injects more fuel, as though it were on the choke.

Ok right, lets try and sort your problem.

When did you swap the engine?
Where do you live and whats the weather been like around and since the engine change?
Are you using the sensors from the new engine?
Did you fit the water/oil cooler?
Did you modify or re-route any of the water hoses?

the swap has been done now for about a month!

when doing the swap it was cold and damp and now its colder and damper.

which sensors do you mean? i think im using the pb oil temp.

yes to the oil water cooler its in and no i dont think i have re routed any hoses to the best of my knowledge.

    maybe pics will help here
