is it like the City E and HLE Minis of old? Where the top gear is really high so to be more economical - more of an overdrive than a 5th (4th on Minis) - but it leaves a yawning chasm in the revs/power when you change up?
yeah don't worry about the smell when you pull off in 5th its just the engine saying its being more "e"conomical Slick
my old tx is 4 and e my gti at the mo is 1, 2, 4 and 5 sometimes if 5 is feeling friendly 3rd has had enough and has decided to go on perminent vacation
Stands for economy gear, it's still 5th just a taller gear ratio in 5th, typically GTIs have a 5th ratio of 0.91(20mph/1000rpm) whereas E tends to be 0.71(25mph/1000rpm), final drives are different too but can't be arsed to explain cos it don't make a big deal of difference.
I found there was a big gap between 2nd and 3rd which bogged the car down somewhat on acceleration and the high top gear was fine cruising on the motorway at high speeds. I'm not sure I'd fit another one, the close ratio GTI box suits the car much better IMHO.
Yes but im running a 1.6 box at the moment which just runs out too quick in my car & was told the extra torque my car produces is better suited to this box plus i gain a quaife diff.
1.6 boxes are a little bit low.... You could calculate the in gear speeds on graph paper and see your change points, then you'll know what to expect (other than more traction of course). I'm tempted to fit the 5th gear from one to my 2.0 but it bogged down the old 1.8 engine a bit much for me, needs big torque.
I've got a DFQ 5th 0.8:1 in mine 3600 at 80mph in top. Will find that handy gear calculator link.. brb http://www.spiretech.com/~vw6spd/tech.html Edited by: G_V_K
