hotgolf is rebuilding my 16v box and fitting my LSD... compare it to to mikes price i could have im making on hell of a saving
I've driven a x-flow 2.1 with what I think is a 4+e+quaife and it was fine, not really given it stick myslef as it wasnt my car, but I've been in it when it has been caned and it's got torque to handle the high ratios. I think TSR built that 'box as well....
I'm under the impression that you cant fit a 4+e box to a 8v gti engine, not without some fairly big mods. I forget the reasons why though. I'm gonna put the 1.05L final drive in my 4+E box at some point for a laugh (if it'll fit) Summit like 100mph in top @ 7000rpm
wasnt it the new bettle 2.0 8v the crossflow head came on, the best head if you wanna do twin carbs or throttle bodies i reckon! phatvr6 and his mate built a 8v turbo with crossflow head that looked awesome, they take abit of modding to fit on the older blocks, think part of the oil way has to be blocked so it doesn't leak oil everywhere,
the 4+E thingy goes straight on, its just an 020 box after all, they got called 4+E after what they wrote on the top of the gearlever. The F?D wont swap from your 1050cc type box, its a totally different 'box, an 084 or 085 (4 and 5 speeders respectivly) If you want a very low F/D the fit a 1.6 gti box (rare)or better still a Maestro Van.....
take a look on vortex for info on the x-flow engines, they are real common on mk3 engines over there. The car I drove ws a mk1 jetta with an american head on a 2.1 2E with digi fueling. It really needed the quiafe and fresh tyres all the time.... a turbo'd one would be mad!
Jake, if youve done it yourself, fair enough. But im certain my box in a 085. The 1.05L box is a 084. thats whtamy haynes manual says anyway.. They look alot smaller, have different sized clutches (realse mechs to if im not mitaken) and above all else, the gear linkage is totally and utterly diferent, so changes are the inside of the box are aswell. Ill find out when i can find my haynes manual.
now I see what you mean, they called some of the 085 boxes a 4+e too..... I was only thinking of the 020 boxes silly me! You can swap an 084 for an 085 if thats what you want to do, but I'm not sure about internals.
Ah that explains why the echonomy guage type thing in the top of some clock sets only works in 5th gear!!
Hi guys, A "specialist" fitted the wrong box to my 8V gti by mistake - a 4+E... Its slower through the gears - huge gap between 3rd and 4th - have to rev to 4000 in 3rd.... 4th gear is roughly where old 5th gear is etc. BUT 5th gear amazing on motorway (gentle cruising 3500 rpm @ 95mph), gti engine strong enough unless steep incline. Ideally would like to go back to "AUG" box but these guys cant find one..... Coming round to the idea of this 4+E - a real motorway eater - maybe if you beefed up the engine youd have best of all worlds hmmm. not sure.
I rev to the limiter (6250) in all gears ,first 2 gears in the 4=e are short (quick with a big engine) but you need the extra torque for 3rd (one of the reasons im putting it in mine) & i'll put less rpm & expand the life of the engine when cruising on the motorway also saving fuel.
You might find that the taller gearing suits your engine very well, i.e. the taller 3rd and 4th may mean you can hang onto each gear much longer. The time/speed lost initially by the taller gears may well be made up by fewer gear changes. You should be able to pull 125+mph in 4th
Well you know im no wimp & HIPPY!!!!! i aint got much hair usually (i HAVE an excuse for my wooly hat ) (except me semi-beard when i cant be @rsed )
