Hello all. I want to finally get to the bottom of the whole thing and find out the truth about the torque characteristics of the 8v and 16v Mk2 engines. Does anyone have a graph of torque for these? Either on the same graph or seperate as I can traspose them on to the same graph and post it in this forum for all to share. I know the 16v has more torque overall but I think we all want to know what the comparrison is like through the entire rev range. Thanks. Ex Mk1 owner, soon to be Mk2 owner.
A mk2 16v produces peak torque of around 124lbs/ft as standard whereas an 8v produces a peak figure of around 115lbs/ft for a later car... From experience the in-gear times are pretty similar up until around 5Krevs where the extra 30 or so BHP allows the 16v to stretch its legs... Up to this point the 8v is more or less a match. The fact that the 8v torque curve is very flat makes the car feel very punchy, if not out & out quick, hence the reason why some people prefer the 8vs relaxed driving manner & instant get up & go...
16v torque plot, might be a bit deceptively flat cos it starts at 2.3k but even looking at the scale and adjusting it is still pretty flat.
Good idea about the same rolers and day. Any Roling road day graphs for standard cars would help if any one has them. Can't seem to find any Volkswagon graphs anywhere.
16v all the way for me, just love the revving...not so keen on the 8v just hasn't got the grunt that the 16v gives!
Yours is dead. Remove it from your sig at once and replace it with a picture of a small Japanese man.
These two charts were taken on our RR Day (same day/same rollers) 16V played with a bit 8V standard Edited by: ValverPaul
The 8V will be more of a relaxed drive, where as the 16V will have to be worked hard but will be faster... This is only a general rule though, and my two penneth as I have both at the moment.
This is a never ending debate! I like the 16v but would love a spin in a nicely tuned 8v like fthaimike's or Chris's to see what it's like by comparison
My 9a with flowed head, kr cams and powerflow exh produced 145ibft torque at near 6000rpm my old 8v with 2lt tsr oulton engine with webber twin choke, tsr 4 branch and mongoose system 159ibft at 4500ish. 8v came in more prominant than 16v, really could fell 8v kick in. Still prefer my 16v tho any time.
