Hum, think this has been covered many times before, i remember reading every thread before i bought my car. I went for the 16v because they are so much better, lol :)

as this has never been covered before, its a less powerful engine in all respects. It feels like it has more torque especially low down as it runs out of puff quickly high up in the revs. the 16v just gets quicker and quicker.

    i own an 8v

so far we have established that you need a mk2 8v and a mk3 vr6.

the 8v can ripple the tarmac when you take it to work, then then the next day you can take the mk3 vr6 and steamroller the roads flat again.

also that god used a mk2 8v, launched it hard in 1st a couple times and managed to tilt the earth onto its 13.5* axis which created the seasons.

hiroshima was actually a then experimental 8v being dropped on to japan.

so yeah, this has been debated once or twice :p

Seriously - no you're wrong, the 16v has more torque (and bhp) than the 8v - look up the manufacturers power/torque graphs and it'll show you that.

Not so seriously (in the Matt82 vein) - my friends mk2 8v was recently arrested for torque-terrorist offences. It's now in Guantanamo Bay...

i dont understand why people even bother. if a vw designer came out and said 'ok everyone i've designed a new engine to take on the 1.9 205, its a 16v version of our 1.8 currently in the gti. It has less torque' he'd be sacked in a second for taking the p*ss

bought a mk4 passat with an ABF in it at the weekend, omg its wrong that a 300 estate is that quick.

tbh, dont bother with an 8v, theyre just so gash. although they sound better imo

    thats pretty clean looking too

with regard to the health of it, the number of miles per tank should be a good indication. mine normally takes 43-45L to fill it and it always does 300 miles per tank

well we drove it back 125miles from shrewsbury to huntingdon where my mates unit is on 20 worth and still had a bit left for a hoon round the lanes ;) and theres still a bit left in it, so seems healthy enough.

It supposedly had a running problem where it would surge at 70-80mph and the previous owner had spent loads replacing stuff- has a new coil, knock sensors, leads, plugs, dizzy cap etc . . . hed got fed up with and left it on the drive since october (started first time tho!) but on the way back we couldnt get it to replicate the problem at all? he had had the battery off to charge it up so maybe it has reset something in the ecu? dunno, but it now runs fine!

didnt want to put a tank full in as its not gonna be driven again till the engines in my car and the passat has a 75 litre tank

I had to take my 8v off the road for 2 years because of the daylight saving getting thrown out of sync.

I'm not going to tell the goverment that it's going to be back on the road this year, i will leave it to NASA to tell them something is up when the space station isn't where it is supposed to be in the sky.
