Hi all, I've got a couple of questions and I would appreciate any advice:

I'm considering buying an ABF engine from a Mk3 Golf Gti 16v which has come out of another mk2. It comes with the loom, clocks, ecu, driveshafts, manifolds and a full SS system. Firstly is 500 a good price for the whole lot?

Secondly the car it came out of ran a Mk3 subfame which I am not getting (he's putting a VR6 in instead), can I mount this engine onto a mk2 subfame or will it sit too high? Am I best just to find a mk3 subframe?

    cheers
    Ian

500 is a reasonable price, but you need to know the mileage first I guess, and the history proof to back it up.

If this is going in a MK2 16v then you need to ask how much time, effort and money you want to put into the conversion. If you want simple (and that doesnt mean a loss in power over complicated) then you just need the engine. You dont need the loom or manifolds, driveshafts or anything else.
Swap all the ancillaries across and then install (ok thats a little simplified)

There are lots of people on here that can help so keep the questions coming

Best person to ask over this is tubthumped if hes about. His mk2 is running an ABF engine on Kjet injection, and it goes like stink. Like Chris said, this way all you need then is the engine, as everything swaps over, and you dont have to worry about wiring in looms and Ecu's and stuff

Hope that helps, as I'm looking at the same conversion myself in the future, but I wouldnt pay 500 if I was just having the engine

    cheers for the replys folks.

The thing is I haven't actually bought a mk2 yet. My daily driver is a seat ibiza cupra 16v (with an ABF!)and I'll be doing the mk2 as a winter project.

This engine turned up very locally to me and I'm considering getting it.

I'm looking at a few mk2's at the weekend, all 8v's, but it sounds like an easier conv with a 16'v mk2. Something to think about I guess.

I've been told that the ABF will foul the bonnet on a mk2 subframe, doest the mk2 16v inlet manifold solve this problem?

    cheers
    Ian.

P.S. @ Tubthumped, finally someone else who appreciates the humor of fear and loathing in las vegas!

Fear nd Loathing is soo good! Hunter S. Thmpson a true genious!

The ABF only fould the bonnet slightly.. just knock a scientific dent into the strut and you are fine.

Are you planning on keping the Digi injection or running on K-Jet?

The book is so much better than the film, but they always are!

I was planning running digi, but it sounds like K-Jet would be better.

hmm, so just to clarify, I would be best (read cheaper) finding a 16v mk2 and just source an ABF block and head. Then swap the inlet/exhaust maifolds, injection system and Gear box (I was gonna do this anyway to avoid the Hyd clutch) over from the kr mk2?

    Ian.

I think it's one of the best screenplay from a book.. manages to keep the same essence if you know what i mean.

    As for the car;
I think you could easilly get away with an Early 8v (running k-jet).
