So I’ve gone and got another project car. My A reg is still in the states and instead of shipping it, I’m gonna put it up for sale….to fund my next project that I’ve just bought for the pricey sum of £300. It’s an 85 gti, 1.8 8v that needs some work. 32BBB774-76EA-46B1-B581-2CA2EE21423B.jpeg

That's a pretty early one. I see someone went full "90 spec" on it.

Argh wrong doors and everything! What's the plan, try to get back to OEM-ish, keep it Max Power or otherwise?

I would say work with what you’ve got ! No point looking for replacement doors and bumpers unless yours are gone beyond repair as costs will soon mount up ! Best make it presentable, have it decently resprayed after you fix any major rot and -if you’re not happy with it- sell it further on so you can buy the right car for you ! Or better, have your one from the states shipped back to uk and work on that !

Wow the only things they didn't do were the dtm Cup mirrors and a wing vent, all standard mods done in the VW scene back in the day, how times change, good luck with your project

The plan so far is to put small bumpers back on, a new tail gate as the current was shaved very poorly then get working on a vr swap as well as brake upgrades, exhaust and seats. The paint is very poor but body work wise it’s not too bad

Blimey. 90’s through and through. I’d be going back to full early spec if it were me!

Look forward to seeing it progress [:D]

Regarding the doors, is it possible to swap the glass / frames from early doors into old doors to make them look correct, or is it more complicated than that?

And yeah... that big patch on the boot is horrible haha. Also looking forward to seeing progress on the de-90s-fication :)

Unfortunately it’s not possible as the doors themselves are different. I’ve started tracking down a few parts but my funds were just depleted by back to school shopping this last weekend

I love the ironic use of that tea cosy thing on the front of the bonnet given the state of the paint!

Is it vinyl peeling off or just really bad paint?

Lol, I really don’t like the tea cost on the bonnet but it’s not gonna matter soon. The paint looks like plastidip paint the a lot of Americans use, I think it’ll come off with a good pressure wash

Bad news and good news. Sadly, she’s going to a new home already.
Good news is the person she’s going to is shipping my 84 mk2 back to the uk for me. If it all works out ok, my 84 gti should be back in the uk around march 22
