    Work on the head before you go toying with cams - same rule
    applies with 16v's really, IMO

    Kent GS2H gave me cracking results on an otherwise standard engine... ask GVK just how well that 8v went. That was a K-Jet though!

    Tub, how was the low down power affected and the idle? You dont need a vernier for that cam do you?

    It wouldhave gone a little better with vernier but i didn't use one and still got good gains.. idle was still pretty smooth, although a dodgy ISV made things interesting at one point. The graphs show a gain in power from 1500 rpm up and a far smoother curve.

    Before and after...

    1 = around 98 bhp at wheels
    2= 114.9 bhp at wheels

    To get the best gains you need a flowed head, K&N panel filter (with the guts ripped out of the airbox) & ideally an ECU rechip to up the fuelling...

    Cam wise id recommend a TSR 202, a bit more lumpy at idle than a GS2H, but smooth as soon as you blip it & revs out to 6500RPM instead of the standard digi trate of hitting a brick wall at 5500.... [:D] [:D]

    A vernier is always a good idea IMO as cams rarely run their best on stock timing. I think its a manufacturers ploy to grind them slightly out so you have to shell out another 80 to get it running right...

    Chrismc, have you got the tsr cam in your 8v, what other mods have you got to get 140 bhp?

    No, I used to...

    The 202 is great in an 1800 or 1900 conversion, but a bit too mild for a 2L like mine.

    I use a 2L block with a flowed big valve head & TSR 203 cam (282deg duration) It also has an AmD chip & the usual exhaust/intake mods...

    It gave 122atw @ TSR with a possible full throttle enrich problem, (as I found out later), which is about the same as most standardish (filter/exhaust) KR 16v's & standard ABF 2L 16v...

    Will be going on Stealths RR again soon, so I should have a definitive flywheel figure.[:D] [:D]

    If you are planning on staying at 18 or 1900 then a Stage 1 head is fine & will cost around 350-400.. :lol:

    If you plan in going 2L in the future then a Stage 2 head(Big exhaust valves) is just the ticket & improves top end breathing a lot...650-700 tho[:s]

    I am interested in this mod also, and have a few questions...

    Smithy,

    What mods have you done to your driver?

    Tubthumped,

    Had you done any other mods other than cam before and after?

    See below image for all three graphs (Smithy and Tubthumped x 2).

    Looks like its a Kent GS2H for me! just sold my old bottle cap alloys for 80 quid, so im going to order one next week.

    My engine spec is;

    DIY rebuild and port job on the head, matched manifolds
    Weber 32/34 DMTL
    std 8v GTi camshaft
    Digifant 4 into 2 exhaust manifold
    Removed spikes and Machined smooth the manifold heater

    It seems pretty healthy anyway, the guy at the rollers said my headwork must have been pretty good as it made the peak power at 5636rpm which is a bit higher than a normal 8v. Should work well with the fast road cam, i'll let you know how it goes!

    The car went on the rollers first time with a Jetex full stainless and a K+N panel filter with a massacred airbox. It had a full setup at Awesome not long before.

    It had the cam put in and was re-setup and the final RR readout was given.
