Self centering mechanism for 'motorsport' type shifter now fitted and tested today - took a few versions to get degree of springing right but now is 6N/mm and feels good and takes all slack out of shift mechanism, very nice to use now - testing further at Oulton park tomorrow

Basically threaded bar has a washer on the end of it and this sits inside copper tube with a compression spring either side of the washer - all set up so that no load on either spring other than a slight bit of preload when in 3rd / 4th plane. If go either way of 3rd/4th plane such as for 1st or 5th then have to push against resistance of springs.

Messing about was to get the load right and the amount of travel before the springs went coil bound so can get reverse as well. Be better if it was totally vertical paralllel to cable but had to avoid bolt head on tower supports. Probably re-engineer the whole thing over the winter once I know 100% will work 'under pressure"

    Ave it

ps - sat thinking the other night and this could easily be a hydraulic or air cylinder or linear actuator - combine this with another fore/aft one and you could make a paddle shift mechanism for H-pattern gearbox - any one ever seen anything like this ?

    Looks good Rob!

Regarding the ps - now you're getting technical, they do have those air shifters for drag bikes tho....

they have em for cars as well - with bike engines, radicals and the like -

    http://www.proshift.co.uk/

really nice stuff but its only fore / aft - for H pattern you need to do the movement in 2 planes which should be very doable with 2 similar actuators and some electronics to control the movement -

first = actuator 1 full return, actuator 2 full return
second = actuator 1 full return, actuator 2 full extension
third = actuator 1 half stroke, actuator 2 full return
fourth = actuator 1 half stroke, actuator 2 full extension
fifth = actuator 1 full extension, actuator 2 full return

    never seen anything like this......

How about using high torque stepper motors mounted directly on top of where the cables attach to the gearbox?

Ford do that type of thing on their 'dura-shift' semi auto boxes, it just looks like a pair of wiper motors strapped to the normal IB5 'boxes.

That's only because you couldn't be bothered to get the wire brush out and clean it up....

Oh - and you've forgotten to write "mk4 ***R32*** shifter" on it - some people might see it and think it came out of a lower spec model...
