When you say 'tinkle' do you mean plug it into a laptop and adjust a few setting or do you mean go and get a degree in 'automotive hard stuff' then use your freshly gained knowledge?

I realy like the look of the QPE unit.

Cool, mus get a subscription sorted to the mags, can only get the golf up here, sometimes!!

Surely the likes of stealth wold supply you with a DTA with a reasonable map for your engine if you gave them a spec when you bought it?? ie for a 150bhp engine they'd give you a 190bhp map??

QPE comes with a pre modded VW mk4 loom and realy is plug and play, no wire cutters needed!!

It also uses the original coilpack, maf and other bits that i believe other systems dont/wont/cant use and have to be replaced at further cost to the car owner

yeah, it says in the article that the kit has the loom, ecu and ready mapped chip for 200bhp. Its currently only for the cable operated throttle that is the 150bhp AGU engine found in 97-99 mk4 golfs and some A3's

Can a mk2 20vt be reliable to use everyday? I know people who have got turbo'd cars like RS turbo's and they seem to be constantly messing with them.

There's not much going back though now, i've ordered my private number plate:
    A20 VTA

    A 20VT A

Of course it will be, it will be as reliable as a mk4 golf.

I just want to be able to give it a caning and not worry about having to rebuild it everytime i get home like the RS Turbos.

Will i need to let the car idle for 30seconds when i stop to let the oil run around the turbo? A mate told me to do this to stop the turbo getting knackered so quickly...

RS turbos are a completeley different type of turbo engine. They don't use anything like the amount sensors to control boost/knock etc like modern turbo engines have.

With 200bhp (which is a good for a generic remapped AGU) the engine will be perfectly reliable. You can put much more power though these engines before you need to get worried aboput reliability.

If it was me, I would perhaps try to get hold of a later 2000 onwards K03 turbo as they have an improved design and can supply higher boost more reliably.

would an AGU engine out of a W reg golf be the one with this KO3 turbo?

Got a mate who can't decide wether to break the mk4 or not, and i want the engine out of that.

Is the turbo cool-down period required on these engines aswell?

No it won't. AFAIK no AGU engine has the later K03. The AUQ engine does.

Basically you don't have to swap the turbo, but 200BHP is about the limit that the older K03 can supply safely. The later K03 can be re-mapped to get 240ish if you want more out of the engine later, plus its a straight swap.

If you want one, contact this guy mike@am-motorsport.co.uk or see his website http://www.am-motorsport.co.uk/.

    You'd want a K03-052, K03-053 or K03-058.

But hey, thats only one way. You could go for a K04 like richgit and hit more power or even an IHI. All depends on ya plans and budget.

Easiest description of the early and late turbos is KO3 for the early 150bhp engine and KO3s for the later 180bhp engines, Im not sure about the later Seat engine codes/turbos though........anyone know?

I think the late ibiza 180bhp is the auq engine with the K03s and VVT. Leons get the 225 BAM engine with K04 same as Audi TT.

    As always, could be wrong.

Yeah same as. I got all the VW/Audi info but hardly any Seat and Skoda.

I'm kinda going from what I hear at meet ups.
