The database of drawings is massive.

I could actually go through it and cross-reference every joint!

    BUT:

    I am not going to!

    ALTHOUGH:

I will look at any special requests.

Does anyone know of a direct fittment outer CV for Golf MK2 that uses a bolt instead of a nut?

This is interesting as it shows Z = 27 Teeth (Splines) as are some of the the Mk3 Kit Car shafts! But, the Kit Car CVs use a bolt of course!

It's the only 27 Spline one I have found yet.

Some of the other Mk3 Kit Car shafts have 25 Splines and some 28 splines!

    Not found one yet Tom!

The Audi 80/90Q Rear is the one used by VWMS, and special hub with larger bearings, and a bored out wheel housing!

OK many thanks  would it be wise to modify an original item? cut of the threaded section and pop it on the lathe to bore then tap? Would the threads have to be heat treated in anyway? What thread size do the smallest bolts use?

I can see one is 14mm (B3 Audi 80 Front) and the MK2 splined part is just over 20 (maybe 22mm OD will try and measure one), this would leave around 3to4mm wall thickness - is that enough meat [:[] what do you think Dave?

Edit. Found a new smaller bolt size.

Well I wouldn't Tom! You are scaring me now!

I recon that 20mm is a reasonable assessment of the root dia. I don't have DIN 5480 or 5482 to hand these days to come up with acurate dimns.

The Audi 80 CV has an M14 thread in approx 25mm root. 5.5mm wall.

The Audi 90 F has an M16 in approx 27 mm root. 5.5 wall.

Don't forget Moment of Inertia is proportional to D /\ 4 so small difference in OD - ID will make big differences in strength!

  9. Admin Guest

Just been out to measure a CV and the route is 22mm. 4mm wall. As you say not worth the risk if VW are using at least 5.5mm wall.

So it will have to be a hub change with more splines and larger bore to allow more meat for the bolt.

Is there anymore information around about that 'special' hub? was it a 4x100 stud pattern?

    Tom.

    Just out of interest.

Consider the original GTI outer CV with nut then:

Your Idea of drilling and tapping will be 77% as strong.

The Audi 80 set up is 220% stronger.

If you look at the thread below:

Post #110 shows the VWMS set up.

Post #218 shows the orininal VWMS hub design with a welded extension.

    https://clubgti.com/forums/index.php?threads/217443

    This thread has more info:

    https://clubgti.com/forums/index.php?threads/221091

    Basically:

Bore out the wheel bearing housing to suit Audi 80 bearing - 893 407 615

    (Audi 90Q Rear - 443 407 615 A & Passat - 823 407 615)

    Use Passat hub, which is 4 x 108, and add 4 x100 tappings - 321 498 625 D

    (Audi 90Q Rear - 443 498 625 & Audi 80 - 321 498 625 E)

You can then use VW or Audi Wheels. 7 x 15 Ronal R8s are easier to find in 4 x 108, but still not too common!

    Neil.

These are the two listed for Mk4 115 bhp 1.9 TDi.

No mention of GT. The 150 bhp TDi 4Motion uses the same outer!

I doubt for a second the database is wrong, theres probably more than one cv for the mk4 depending the year
i have just stripped the mk4 (which is from a W reg)one now and the inner splines are the same as the vr one, just not sure what year the vr one is
thanks for your help on this btw

Great posts Dave, I have read them with interest before but have not really put the information into any sort of practice/scenario!

After reading it all i had two points to make (but im on holiday and went to the pub so only can remember the one), and here it is:

    In reference to the VWMS hubs there was this posted;

    In reference to;
    hub.jpg

That would mean they used a 22mm shaft spline AKA MK2 shaft??? - this is where we need more info, as it would not seem right as the hub would be the same as a normal G2 except the 'special' hub - which looks to be just a part added onto to centre and support the VWMS spacers, where there more differences?

What was the size of the bolt they used? this could give (if they used the MK2 spline - size of 22mm? stated by Idorap) a wall thickness maybe?

Did they just use a standard modified (spaced) hub? I count 22 splines (on the VWMS pic below) but it could easily be 24 or 26 as some of them are not in the pic and therefore I have counted only half way round (which was hard to tell) and doubled?

Do you have any more info on this?

What I do for you TOM!

Don't have the 8V Workstatthandbusch, only the 16V one which only calls up the later type CVs. I have been hunting for an 8V Handbusch for years now!

These are from the 8V and 16V Homologation Sheets.

Correct. It was not until Audi developed the B3 90 20V that the hub with a bolt was designed. Even the UR Quattros, right up to 1991, had a nut!

The Passat, of the same era, still had the nut, even though it used the same bearings and hub as the Audi!
