How many of these exist? Are there different lengths?

It's an easy part to change unwittingly, only to find oil levels are higher or lower than expected.

    8v / 16v / any others match up?

    Same length?

Do you know whether the collar itself is the same?

ive found loads on various VW and Audi engines, as long as its a big block lump they're all the same. only minor difference I've seen is that some are yellow, some are orange, and some are red

No idea. Just chucked it and fitted the right one. Didn't think to compare them at the time. I know the part numbers are different and the marking are different, but I don't know if the max and min markings are at different levels.
Stealth have plenty knocking around, so can have a quick look while I'm there in a couple of weeks time.

    Diesels certainly are different.

    Some interesting comparisons though:

    From the top:

    1) 1Z TDI - 028 115 611 C
    2) KR - 027 115 611 B
    3) 9A/ABF 051 115 611 B (late?)
    4) 9A/ABF 051 115 611 (early)

    IMG_4311.jpg IMG_4313.jpg

Ignoring TDI (top) the KR 027 stick has the hatched area 5mm higher than the 051 sticks...
    IMG_4314.jpg

    Plastic collars:
    IMG_4316.jpg

    1) 1Z (TDI) - 028 103 663
    2) KR - 058 103 663

1Z plastic collar is 3mm longer than KR, measured level from where it fits over the metal tube.

Could anyone confirm what the 051 sticks are from, and that there's only 1 plastic collar specced for a KR/9A/ABF?

    see edit!
The oil level is same for tall & short block, as the guide tube goes to the base of the block, the difference in height is above there ;)

    [:$] Good point!

So the plastic collars are the same (bar diesel), but the markings on 027 KR sticks differ a little to 051 9A/ABF sticks.

If the metal dipstick tubes are identical for all 8v/16v engines (excl diesel), then it seems a KR runs more oil, by 5mm, than 9A/ABF ?

Unless the metal tubes differ? Any data showing?

so it would seem as the metal pipe is the same on the 1.6-2.0 8v and 16v.
unless the design of the 2.0 16v blocks at the base differs ever so slightly, or perhaps the rubber sump gasket has something to do with it

I've just found a snapped plastic collar on a KR with an 027 dipstick.

    The collar is 049 103 663.

Just to check this is listed as "discontinued, replacement" to 053 103 663

Great, just found an EZ with the same old 049 103 663 plastic collar.

Checked a few dipstick steel tube lengths for protrusion from block.

Block face where steel tube pressed in => up to => centre point of raised steel collar which the plastic collar slips over:

    1) 1Z (TDI) - 182mm
    2) KR - 209mm
    3) EZ - 211mm
    4) ?3E? - 212mm

Possible scope for small error in the measurements, but all petrol ones are v. close.

The level markings are in different places on some of the dipsticks which can lead to over/under filling:
