I am seriously interested in an engine upgrade for my 6n polo at some point and I have seen some with 1.6 16v and 1.8 16v DOHC conversations and wondered what I should look for and what prices I should expect etc?

EA827 16v conversions are not applicable to the 6N, more the 6K chassis ( Polo Classic or Caddy)
Some have squeezed 06A 1.8Ts. Usually what is more applicable is the EA111 1.6 16v GTI engine.
Suppliers down here have done this indeed.

If you get this done, keep on top of the cam belt(s) servicing. They run a strange arrangement of two belts, with a small idler up the back. This small idler must spin at a zillion mph.
If a right mess when the belt/idler fails.
I have fixed a couple. Including replacing pistons, bent conrods etc

To keep in the Polo engines there are a couple choices...
    AVY ( or similar ) its a port injected 125 hp 1600,
There are the more recent direct injected engines as BLF ( or similar)
OR you can go for an AFH 1400 engine and by the use of a 1600 crank and conrods it becomes a 1600
