How split should the door window seals be? If at all?

There is a chap called “private collection” who sells genuine ones on Instagram but he is located in Europe so I’m not sure if they would end up cheaper or not. Might be worth dropping him a message though.

dont believe they should be split no, but always are. if they're otherwise good what about getting a roll of felt tape and sticking it all round the inside to create a sealed joint again. may help with wind noise past the glass

Yes, we will investigate that for sure. The cloth loom tape may be suitable.

I randomly fixed a split one of these over the weekend. Used bicycle patch repair solution to glue the rubber back together, and then supported the inner channel with some foam blocks to stop it splitting again. Was just done as a “patch job” until I buy new ones but to be fair it has worked so well I might live with it. The windows have never fitted so snuggly or sealed as tightly!

those are the only snaps I took but I can pull the seal out and take some more if you want? Hardest bit was cleaning the torn seal so that it stuck back together perfectly. The foam blocks were approx 5mm thick and stuck in the groove with a small dot of hot glue just so that they didn’t fall out when I reinstalled the seal.

Great idea with bike glue, off to poundland @PhilRyder and stock up.
Just remembered, well actually earlier when rj said about wind noise, on the mg it's a tip to put a silicon tube behind the seal lip to push it outwards on to the glass, don't know if it's possible on a thinner scale in the golf.
Also literally popped in head, think can get new seals for classic minis, not sure if usable, not got any about I'm afraid.

interesting that you mention wind noise. My passenger side has always had bad wind noise and I could never work out why. Since doing this it has reduced greatly so I’m guessing the collapsed seal was causing it.

I did about the same supporting seal lip, but instead used thin rubber hose. Much better sealing, power washing, no more water in. Also noise is down, some noise comes from the mirrors so used some foam there.
