Rubjonny here, hope no-one minds me editing the first post! But it saves people having to dig thru 8 pages to get the info. Credit to RobT for starting the thread, and credit to everyone who contributed to this awesome list

Anyone who wants to contribute could you include the following measurements:
    1) Total length
    2) Circlip centreline to circlip centreline (the grooves are ~ 2mm wide).

    Golf 1 / Scirocco 1 & 2 / Cabrio
    • 084 gearbox with 90mm inner CVs (TBC - data from ElsaWIN)
      • Short shaft: 467.5mm
      • Long shaft: 658mm
    • 020 gearbox with 90mm inner CVs (TBC - data from ElsaWIN but believed to be 6-8mm longer than '100mm shafts')
      • Short shaft: 445.5mm
      • Long shaft: 658mm
    • 020 gearbox with 100mm inner CVs
      • Short shaft: 433mm, 421mm circlip centreline to centreline
      • Long shaft: 650mm
    • 010 automatic gearbox with 90mm inner CVs (TBC - data from ElsaWIN)
      • Short shaft: 445.5mm
      • Long shaft: 658mm

    Golf 2 / Mk2 Ibiza / Mk3 Ibiza

You sure on the first line Rob? MK2 and MK3 4 stud shafts definitely arent the same length

Also, when you quote passat VR6, do you mean 4 stud or 5 stud shafts? I dont know until I measure them again, but I dont recall there being 9mm difference in the wishbones lengths between MK3 VR and passat VR

Not sure, assumed they were, what was measured was G2 16V and Mk2 Ibiza which are exactly the same - edited to remove G3 if you say this is so

Passat VR6 is what I mean, would think they were 5 stud. These measurements are definate, I have the shafts, I measured them last night and I know the cars they came off. I am not talking about wishbone 'length', this is driveshaft length. The overall track width of wishbone on passat and G3+ is very similar but the geometry is much different, G3+ puts the wheel towards the front of the car more and as on both cars the driveshafts point backwards gearbox-to-hub, needs a shorter shaft than the passat. This geometry difference is also evidenced by the ARB mounting method - bolted through the wishbone on a passat but fastening to the rear edge of the wishbone on droplinks on G3+ - the wishbone being too far forward to allow bolting through the wishbone anymore a-la passat and narrow track G2/3. If you fit a passat shaft to a G3+ axle, there is insufficient float in the shaft leading to inner CV failure (eventually or if driven hard). 3 cases of race cars having done this recently.

Think we are at cross purposes with the passat stuff Rob - what I was getting at is that a passat vr6 and golf vr6 should be nigh on identical in theory (driveshaft lengths), because the hubs used identical on both cars - the wishbones are different, but I think this is only because VW were too tight to develop an ARB just for this car - it uses the same one as fitted to 4 stud passat models, and hence the fitment into the wishbone is the same as a MK2 Golf ibiza. (I have a pair of these somewhere, and will take a look at them in more detail when I get a chance)

Also, to clarify, the MK3 4 stud is wider than MK2 - I know you have looked into the geometry of the two methods of widetracking (MK3 or passat 4 stud and VR6 5 stud) so am not questionning that at all. I wonder how much effect the angle of the wishbone (as in ride height) has made in causing CV failure in what you mention above.

Should be some good info to come out of this thread, possible use for Berg-ing Mk1s also.

Just FYI, Reeves Mk2 as far as I know, runs Passat wishbones and Passat shafts, and no problems with bursting inner cages. One gave out at Donington in Nov, but it was a moly grease issue, rather than a ball casing shattering.

passat and G3+ axle do have identical hub carriers/uprights, the hub is not going to significantly affect the shaft length, the reason the driveshafts are different is because the wishbones are different shape in plan elevation. The shafts ARE different, I have measured them, practise, not theory. I am now suspecting that all Passats, VR6 and 4 pot are same suspension but it would be nice if anyone knows for sure to confirm this.

Would be nice to get some figures for G3 4 stud axles if you say they are different to G2 4 stud.

Passat wishbones will work just fine with passat shafts, shafts will have float they need. Likewise, G3+ axle will be fine with G3+axle wishbones. Just not a good idea to mix them.

Passat wishbones/ shafts used on mine, had an outer CV give up the ghost recently, but it was worn when I fitted the wide track stuff 2 years ago. No inner CV probs yet [ touch wood ]

Sorry Rob, my written explanation isn't very clear, the passat VR6 and 4 stud varients ARE different, that is what I was getting at

Ok, that doesn't change the details I have put up though, G3+axle and Passat VR6 are difefrent. How are passat 4 pot and passat vr6 different ? if you know this for sure then fine, please explain (photo's too if you have them !). The link to the article above suggests that VR6 and 4 pot passat are same, this could be a US / UK difference I guess, who knows.

Chris - did any of the 5-stud Passats you've seen have VR hubs, or were they all 'Mk2' hubs with 5-stud flanges in them?

The only 5 stud passats I have ever come across have been of the VR variety, and they are all proper 5 stud a la MK3 Golf VR6. I have never seen another hub setup with a 4 stud bearing carrier and 5 stud flange (on a standard car) as my setup used to be, and would 99% doubt VW ever made a setup like that either

Cheers Chris - so does that mean that there is one or two types of Passat wishbone?

One to take the Mk2-style balljoint and another to take the VR balljoint? Bit shaky here on balljoint-to-wishbone bolt-up specifics... [:$]

Correct, one specific to the VR (although the same is listed for ABF and AFN engines, later 16v and 110 version of the TDI respectively), and one for all others. I have yet to come across a AFN engined passat in 5 stud in this country, and not looked elsewhere tbh, and I cant say either way about the ABF engined version either
