^^ Ok, so that could mean VR d/shafts are different to normal 4-stud Passats. Nothing in the late Haynes manual I have here.

    FWIW, Haynes data reads:
    • Golf 2 non-GTI
      • Short shaft: 443mm
      • Long shaft: 677.2mm
    • Golf 2 GTI
      • Short shaft: 447mm
      • Long shaft: 681.2mm

im in the process of taking apart a 1995 ABF engined mk4 passat, its 5-stud with the proper VR6 style upright with a threaded ball joint and associated wishbones, so uses the same setup as the VR6 passat along with 288mm brakes.

the 4 stud passats from 1988 to 1996 used the mk2 golf style uprights with a pinch bolt holding the ball joint in place. So yes, there are 2 styles of passat wishbone.

Great info there. So the question has to be 'is a Passat VR6 wishbone the same as a Golf VR6'

I'd guess not, because the access hole in the wishbone to get a spanner through to the subframe has to be in a different place on a Passat.

So that leaves the lingering doubt of whether the Passat VR driveshaft is longer than a 4-stud Passat driveshaft... and by how much

They're bare measurements, ie without CVs, so if you've got them stripped down...it's end to end

They still have CV joints on and I want to sell them on in the same way... no way of measuring them with the joints on then?

Right, i had a spare pair of drive shafts that have been hiding in the garage for a while. They came with a KR engine and gearbox i bought a while ago. They were said to be from a Golf MK2 16v.

I striped them down and have measured them up, they are

    Short 443mm
    Long 677mm

Now these sizes are a pretty exact match for the haynes non GTi MK2. So looks like i got a bad deal -
Interesting to note that the Outer CV are 80mm measured like this...

and the inner CV is a definate 90mm one. Is there anyway of telling what these shafts are from for certain? the only markings on them are a painted on 50 on the short and 43 on the longer shaft.

    cheers.

looks like 1.6 carby ones then, if the inner cvs are 90mm and the shafts merasure up to non-gti. what code is on the gearbox bellhousing?

  13. Admin Guest

The gearbox they came with was a 16v, looks like the wrong shafts got sent to me

The pic i took of the outer CV shows them as 80mm are these the same as the mk1 GTi outer CV's?

    cheers Tom.

    If the shafts are indeed 1.6 90mm then both c/vs are same part as on a MK1 1.5-1.8 with 90mm c/vs :)

The reason I ask about the box is it may have had the c/v flanges swapped for 90mm jobbers?

  16. Admin Guest

The box had 100mm flanges so it seems the wrong shafts were sent with the box, NP as i had other 100mm shafts.

I was hoping this info would confirm some measurements for this very useful faq

ok cool, just didnt want you to find out the hard way is all
I have a set of 16v shafts coming for mine, if it needs C/Vs I'll measure the shafts. The old ones off my 8vs have totally shafted C/Vs so I'll be able to pop them off for measurements either way.
