Driveshaft lengths (bare driveshaft lengths) ** wanted **

Take two on mine, will get some ABF shafts and MK1 100mm shafts measured when I have time and feel like getting dirty.

MK2 Non GTi shafts from circlip centres, Short 430mm Long 463mm (note long had a rubber balance that make my measurements less accurate.

Do we need a table for this take two...

 

Sure,is that center of the groove or where the red line is in this picture also noticed the rounded circlip groove is 2mm and the square one (inner cv end) is 3mm

 

Gap is ~ 2mm wide.

Include 1mm in your measurement.

 

Are these 020 gearboxed non-GTI? 90mm or 100mm inners? Should 463mm be 663mm?

Total length would be a useful part of the info ongoing also, as I've found it a really good way of identifying nameless shafts 'sat the corner'.

It could be re-worked into a table in time.

 

Hmm, not sure why I posted that! must have been distracted - plus loads of work stuff flying around my head made for a very random post.

Anyway I have the measurements here and I poped the CV's of the ABF shafts so here goes.

Golf MK2 90mm inner CV's.
443mm overall length and 430mm between grooves.
677mm overall and 663mm between grooves.

Golf MK3 ABF 100mm inner CV's.
682mm overall length and 667mm between grooves.
447mm overall length and 435mm between grooves.

Measurements are +/-1mm for the short or +/- 3mm for the long due to the difficulty in measuring shafts with rubber balance weights.

Table was a joke the info is easy to read as is.

 

1988 16v mk2 short 418mm
1988 16v mk2 long 653mm
corrado vr6 5 stud (not sure on year) long shaft 667mm
mk4 1.9 GTTDI 110bhp model W reg 5 stud short 441mm (gear box code tbc)

 

663mm?

I'm afraid ref jokes, my humilty is not what it was after the thread

 

Mine is hardly stoked, nothing was directed at anyone it was my feelings towards that type of attitude and yes 663mm +/-3mm.

 

Ok, everything updated above, let me know of any errors and if you've any more stripped shafts - or the odd shed full of bits , don't hesitate to add.

 

Following a recent discussion with Danster, the early Mk1/Scirocco CV / driveshaft design surfaced as a possible red herring for this thread, due to the CV circlip groove being positioned in a different place. Late/common design bottom, suspected early design top:

It seems the thread needs a bit of a tidy, as it's getting a bit long. Will see what I can do.

 

Yes, that top one is exactly the same style and shape as the one I have here.
The circlip is hidden in the CV grease and needs opened out to enable the CV joint to be removed from the shaft. You cannot knock this type off like the later ones.

 

rallye rear shafts are

404mm long, 390mm circlip to circlip
544mm long, 530mm circlip to circlip

i have audi tt mk1 4wd shafts laying about too.

 

Good stuff, added to the latest list here. Just to confirm, the right side is the short side?

SKF quote drive shaft lengths which, at first glance, don't make a lot of sense!

But, I am working on it!

 

The Mk2 data doesn't make sense. Subtract either of the measurements we have off that data, and the implied length of inner and outer CV differs on both sides (92mm and 72.8mm).

BUT, I tried the SKF Mk1 GTI data, and got a difference of 94.5 on the short shaft and 95 on the long. So those measurements must include outer CV, and possibly trim a bit off the inner, by using the inner CV mouting face, centered on the joint, rather than the end of the shaft itself.

Could be a useful data mine if we can make sense of it.

Haynes data reads:

Golf 2 GTI with 100mm inner CVs
Short shaft: 447mm * Haynes are wrong*
Long shaft: 681.2mm * Haynes are wrong*

These figures are for the distances between the mounting face of the gearbox output flange and the inner face of the wheel bearing.

VW quote - 448mm and 680mm respectively.

So. The car Haynes took apart to measure was assembled 1mm off centre!

5448 would not have assembled a car so inaccurately!
