Guys, I would expect the diode workaround to work with coil packs w/external ignitors, with the Sagem/Reno/Pug/DTA kit units being an example of units that are externally amplified, Diagrams similar to sparrow's have been put here.

However with VW amplified COPs you need the ecu to generate the tach signal ( low amplified signal) and then amplify to suit the vehicle cluster.

I completely agree. The 4 pole things seem to have an edge when it comes to that.

Is there an off the shelf solution available for this?
I want to incorporate an DTA S60 with my mk1 golf rev counter (tittendash)
As the pictures don't work anymore I am not sure what to do.

    I'll sort the pictures shortly.
There is a guy on the CGTi Facebook page that makes adapters as well.

Thanks, just for info on this thread: the tacho output on the ecu is a 12v square wave.

James E Looms has a converter which takes a 5v negative pulse to a 12v negative pulse.
As I thought the output from DTA was also 5v this probably would have worked (?).

But as the tacho-output from DTA is 12v wouldn't this just work directly on the mk1 tacho?
Has the tacho-output form DTA changed over the years from 5v to 12v?
I haven't got my engine installed yet so cannot test it yet.

The other funny thing is, the OP is now the owner of DTA!

Browsing the forum (newbe) and checking this section, I stumbled upon this too.

The old tachos are fed by the coil signal, which is quite a high voltage. I reccon there is a filter in the meter itself, but I didn't dare to open it up further.
Non-OEMs supply a 5 or 12 Volt signal, usually a block type signal, but the tacho does not react on that.
I found people who sell amplifiers for quite some money, so I made an amplifier myself and it worked [:D]

I already sold 3, one of them is supplying @knarfmk1 's tacho with the correct signal! So if you need one, contact me. I can make them for little money, and since it's standard mailbox-size post it shouldn't be really expensive to ship to the UK.

So a rev counter tach converter is like £30, would hardly say expensive but if you’re talking about a speedo, then I’ll be interested but I don’t think you are!

No not the speedo, just the signal amplifier. £30 is a lot cheaper than I could find: € 75,-!!
That's why I made it myself, for a lot less [:D]

the altenative is open the cluster and bypass all the filtering with a wire then the cluster will work from a low amp ecu signal, but easier to just buy a cheap adaptor

Exactly, if you see how fragile the meter is built (the filter is on the meter itself), you don't want to mess with that.
It's easier to literally add 5 parts to boost the signal [:D]
