Today most car engines still use a mechanical waterpump, these run infact too slow at idle ( not enough cooling/ fluid flowing around) and too fast at high revs( too much liquid is pumped around ) and once the engine is switched off, no circulation at all

Its were electric waterpump deliver an answer in supplying just as much as needed for the the conditions. Some car manufacturers made the switch to electric waterpump, these pumps would make an excelent choice .have a read

    - wired and run always at the same speed
    - speed control can be done with a stand alone controller as Tecomotive TinyCWA
    - By the ECU ( need a pwm output)

    Pierburg CWA 200 is 125 l/min @ 450mbar/6.5psi & 200watts. ( Used in BMW up to 272 PS )
this pump is also used in motorsport by Peugeot S2000, Ford Fiesta S2000, and Mini John Cooper Works 1.6T WRC

Pierburg CWA 400 is used in BMW`s with up to 340 PS

BMW electric waterpump are made by Pierburg, Continental and VDO-Siemens

    Other electric pumps come from:

So after all these years- well over 100 now, belt powered water pumps are to be frowned upon :-s

I suspect these are being used to help get some cars under a CO2 tax band etc

That slight reduction in drive train drag and the ability to set the temp to the best level for CO2 reduction?

Ran a Davies Craig setup on the mk1 when they 1st came out. Repeated failures meant I eventually reverted back to mechanical. They have reduced the warranty period right down now, wonder why?

Full setup inc controller, new pump and all brackets could be for sale. Only if the person buying it came to see it first...

From the oem pumps we may expect them more durable, so these are maybe the way to go, rather than aftermarket pumps.

I asked about these before , as I see them (in small sizes) in the likes of MB Sprinters and LTs in work! And people seemed to think they weren't a goer. What does a typical belt driven pump flow?

I had similar issues, but the internal seals are now ceramic and dont fail, i ve got a proper controller on it now, ie an electronic thermostat which controls its speed

More OEM production vehicles are heading this way, along with split systems.

All FE driven but surely can have benefits for racers.

    Ditto
Post seal upgrade and I have never had an issue, mine is driven by the ECU, but basically runs flat out (target water temp is only 70dC)

Any idea on the amperage required to run these pump systems?

After cooling is a great bonus. A simple timer relay will give you 30 seconds (or whatever) after shutdown. Especially good for turbo systems

Has anyone experience of running an electric water pump alongside the OEM belt driven one to circulate the water after the engine has stopped?

The vr6 has one from the factory. Are they plumbed in series with the mechanical pump or in a separate circuit?

As does all 24v VR6 motors.
The runaround pump is there to remove spots and is controlled by the fan controller on Mk4 and Mk3 platform cars.

Guys, thanks, I know other models run extra pumps.
My question was regarding the plumbing of them.

Are they in series with the standard mechanical pump?

To what benefit Rich? I'm not bothered about a few saved horsepower if there is any reduced reliability.

    Why not have both?

Why reverse the flow surely Vw didn't just randomly pick the direction through the engine.
