    HI guys,

Trying to do an ABF conversion into a mk2 gti 8v using the digi ECU from ABF.

Basically have plugged most of it in, just filled up the oil and coolant, and tried to start engine but it's not happening!
The engine will turn over, but just refuses to start.

    Bad bits i have noticed:
    1. The oil light on the dash board appears to constantly flash at me.
    2. Whatever this thing is below, it's making a slight buzzing noise and is vibrating when you turn the ignition key to 2.

    Stray Wires:
I still have a few connectors that i don't have plugged in (probably why the engine won't start!).
There don't appear to be any free connectors to plug them into though!??!
I've tried to show the wire colours for the connectors....!??!

    Please someone help me!!!

So missed a couple of bits...

This part also seems to make a kind of sparking noise when ignition is switch to the 2 position..

Also, may be using the wrong coil. I took it from a mk3 golf, but not a GTi. Looked exactly the same so i went for it
Could this be the problem or are they all the same?

Just been looking at the HT lead between the dizzy and the coil as well which may have a bit of a loose connection.
Guessing this would also stop the car runninng?

    Still need help here guys!!!

Looks like youve gotta find the pegs for the holes the circled item is the idle control valve if its vibrating see if inside the plate is moving when you remove it if it isnt try some carb brake cleaner if it still doesnt move then its down the scrapper were there might be another.
There will be some plugs that dont go to anything cos vw will use the loom for a few cars it just saves them money in not making 20 diffent ones when they can make ten that will fit 20 different cars but as you said you might have a loose connection or an earth off
just as a point try vagcat.com the plug part no might tell you which component they go to

I rember there was a campaign for the coil green or brown stickers you might be right that you have the wrong coil but unless theres a massive difference the engine should start with the coil

So it's the idle control valve making the vibrations, but this surely wouldn't stop the car from starting? I'm guessing it would at least start and then probably idle like a pig or just stall?

    the isv buzzes. thats normal.

    plug 1 is lambda

plug 3 is maybe the throttle pot

pklug 6 looks like radiator fan temp switch

the others are too generic to sort out

PLUG 3 could be the hall sender!! it wont start without that!

3 looks like the coil plug to me, which coil setup are you using?

3 is not the coil plug.
The guy who sold me the engine/loom already had the coil plug labelled up..

I've just had a look on my mate's mk3 gti, and this cable on his appears to go round the back of the engine onto a connector. I don't appear to have this connector!??!

Is the hall sender connector the one right below the dizzy?
If so, i already have a cable plugged in there.

ok those plugs probably arn't needed then, have you checked you get a spark? Does the fuel pump prime when the key is turned 1 click?

You can work out the function of each connector by the colours on the wires within them.
Have you got a haynes manual as you could use that for reference.
If not ,you need a copy of the DIN 47 002 automotive colour chart and that will tell you the function for each colour.
Brown is ground, red is battery pos, black is ignition.
    It may take a while :) :)

    Haven't checked the spark yet...
Guessing that you can just pull the lead going from the coil to the dizzy out at the dizzy end and see if there's a spark?

As for the fuel pump, not entirely sure tbh... I haven't noticed any noises on 1 click, but 2 clicks seems to bring a lot of things to life...

Best ways to check for a spark is to take a lead off at the plug, take the plug out, and put it in the end of the lead, sitting on the rocker cover/manifold to earth the body of it.

Or, if you've got a timing strobe light, just wire that up and see if it flashes. No flash = no spark.

I use a jump lead connected to both ends (spark earth and engine earth), trap the HT lead under the wiper, then you can sit and crank it and check for a spark while looking through the screen.
But that's because I have no friends and will die cold and alone in a gutter. Or, because nobody likes holding HT leads without the big fancy plastic pliers...

Ok, have had the plug out...
Thinking i might need new ones, should the end of a spark plug be black!!?!?

Anyway, tried firing up with the spark plug out and no spark!

Think it may be a dodgy HT lead between the coil and the dizzy....

Well yeh, that's the other bit....
I've def. got petrol in the car if that's what you're asking?
It occurred to me while i was tinkering, 'wonder if there's enough fuel' so i drove down the local garage and transported some lovely optimax for my golfy!

But as for the fuel pump, is there an easy way to tell if it's working or not?

Dont worry about fuel pumps if you havent got a spark!
Whip off the dizzy cap and check the rotor arm is a) there and b) clean. Also check the cap.
Check for a feed to the coil when the ignition is on.
Have you got the large flat earth wire connected from the cylinder head to the coil mounting? Common thing to leave off too! If it's missing, run a jump lead from coil mounting to the neg on the battery and see if she will give a spark at the plug.

Btw......... i'll be screwing around doing this tomorrow too.... mine died on the way home form work tonight

edit: you're not too far from me, so if you get really stuck, i'll pop over and have a look for ya

if you dont hear the fuel pump prime on the 1st turn of the key, then you should start there. One of the possible casues is the ECU isn't getting power, have you got an ECU relay fitted?
