Prob not any help at all but...

Factory immobilisers on Renaults let the engine start and run fine for a couple of seconds then kill it. Just worth knowing that some immobilisers do this I suppose.

Well worth knowing - I'm going to cut the immobiliser out today if I get time, even just to rule it out!

yep I'd say it'd got to be the immob. I had a very similar problem with my mk4 polo due to a shoddy alarm installer who shorted out my factory immob. I took it to vw to reset but cutting it out of the loop altogether should do the trick.

Ian, was your running for a short time then cutting out? I just find it unusual that it cuts the starter totally when armed but might be cutting something else after a few seconds - would have thought they would both have been cut totally? I'm trying to find some info on the immobiliser at the minute, seems to be made by a company called "CEL".

Might sound like a silly idea, but have you tried your airflow meter, am guessing its a 16v,not sure about the setup on these, i used to work for mercedes and we used to have alot of c classes that would cut out after 3-4 secs when cold because it was giving ecu the wrong info about the air temp and would stall the engine especially when u touched the throttle

TSC, the more I think about this the more it sounds like the imobilliser, 3-4 seconds is about the time on most before the imobilliser cuts in so you can quickly restart if you stall it. I hate problems I can't work out!

It's actually an 8v Digi - I've tried swapping the AFM with a known good one and still no change!

Hope you get the car sorted TheSecondComing. I've been reading your difficulties recently.
I think by the nature of it, it must be an immobiliser fault.

It's certainly the prime suspect at the minute..... if it isn't I'm going to end up driving the flamethrowing, windowbreaking evil ex-MarkD car for a bit until I sort it....

Was it starting for a few seconds and then stopping tho, or not starting at all? That's what has me wondering, the fact that it starts at all rather than just cranking and refusing to start. I'm going to take it out anyway, no-one would want to steal my car....

It entirely depends how it is wired in.

I could immobilise any electrical system in my car if i wanted to - how about immobilised windscreen wipers, or interior light? ;)

Can't remember which the ECU relay is off-hand - it's the other one that stops the fuel pump priming if you pull it out and leave the fuel pump relay in place.

Just spent 15 mins ripping out the immobiliser - it had a starter cut, and a cut to the +ve coil connection(which also feeds the TCI unit and indirectly the injectors.....). Pulled it out and hurled it across the garage as is traditional with that sort of thing. Didn't stitch the loom back together yet because I can't find my soldering iron! So hopefully that could have been the problem - if not it's back to square one...... [:x]
