    Hi,

When cold my car (mk2 gti 8v 1990 Pb) is fine, nice normal initial fuel pump buzz on ignition, then pause before car turns over.
However after a few miles, the rear driver wheel area is making a much louder whine / buzz / whistle / noise than normal.

After some reading on this forum:
mad buzzing noise from fuel pump | Club GTI
High pressure fuel pump buzzing loud ?? 8v digifant | Club GTI
noisy fuel pump | Club GTI

I think my lift pump needs replacing - at least first. However I just can't work Etka out on this one.
See below snips - they only show it for KR engine. or KJet engine.

But I have no idea what illustration 216-10 is

    Thanks,
Is it good practice to replace any other bits - like the strainer?

    I'd just clean it.
After that, just the external filter, and hoses if required

Yeah I'd probably throw an external filter on there first for what its worth, if its really clogged it could do that and its a lot cheaper than a pump. Could also try, if it makes the noise while parked, just unplugging the lift pump while the engine is running, just to isolate that it is that.
You'll also want a new tank seal if you do swap the pump most likely - 6N0919133. Get it from the dealer, you'll be pleasantly surprised how much cheaper it is than from VW heritage. My old one has turned to basically glue after 30 years

try to get a pump which comes with a strainer, usually they do. theres 2 sizes so dont want to get caught out. I find the lift pump seal is usually alright but may as well get one if can find cheap

Thanks, I did the fuel filter about 50 miles ago so I know that's good.

Good tip on unplugging the lift pump.

Yes thanks, I just wish I had better etka skills to work it out. I like to research stuff before I do a job you see.

I must have gotten unlucky, had to wash mine off with petrol, was more like the texture of bitumen rather than rubber

Not sure how I undo this clip and save it - I think it's time I own some decent stainless hose clamps:

    Looks like original 1990 part

Nate mentioned it earlier, 6N0919133. this one was superceeded by 191919133 then 4B0919133. Still available from VW or £10+VAT :)
