Hi there so I’ve tried searched through all the differences between the calipers, ie 256 and 280mm calipers, but can’t find a definitive answer on what the fitment differences are. Someone has offered to give me some mk3 vr6 Lucas 54 280mm calipers (although he reckons the discs are 288?) wasn’t sure they came in 288. these brakes will be going on my mk1 Jetta so question is, will these calipers fit if I buy the g60 adapters? Is the measurement between the two carrier bolt holes the same as the g60 calipers? Guessing I’d need to buy mk2 g60 discs as the ones with the 54 brakes are 5 stud of course. Any help appreciated! cheers
The later Mk3 GTI/VR6 stuff was 288mm, I believe only the early VR6 stuff was 280mm? I know the 288mm callipers can’t be used with the 280mm stuff. I can’t help with the rest.
as above MK3 GTI, 16v pre-96 and vr6 pre-95 had same fitment 280mm calipers and carriers, which swap directly onto a mk2 16v type wheel bearing carrier. 280mm caliper is same shape as 16v type except its a bit wider:
@Savagesam It can actually, with a minor inconvenience of the pad overhanging the disc about 1.0-1.5mm. Not the 4mm you'd expect. I fitted them to a 4 stud mk2 gti before, on 16v hubs. Caliper looked stronger than a "280" caliper, bigger pads too iirc.
I just don't like the adapters myself. An extra pair of fasteners to fail. And the GM calipers are stiffer than VW ones.
"280mm" MK3 Lucas calipers are the same as Golf G60, G60 Corrado etc. They are wider than the calipers from a post 88 Golf 16v, due to the thicker disc. You can use them on a MK1 vehicle, with an adpater from Epytec https://epytec.de/en/brake-system/a...er-adapter-g60-s2-adapter-brake-system?c=2047, then use Corrado G60 4 x 100 PCD discs.
