I currently have an exhaust which is a little loud. I like it when cruising down country roads but hate it when pulling into the shops to get milk. Anyway i wanted to get as close as possible to factory as possible, any pointers would be great.

Some bits are available, but not all of them. German eBay do decent full replacement systems for reasonable money 'golf 2 auspuff' ;)

What exhaust is currently fitted to the vehicle?

Just having a loud exhaust could be highly subjective.

We could tell you fit this brand or that and make it even worse.

I'll add my two cents here which I hope might help
If you want a slightly uprated exhaust but one that is reasonably aligned to OEM then Jetex is the one to go for - I had a mild steel one on my old 16v and it was a good piece of kit, very refined, no booming just a nice but slightly deeper gurgle.
If I'm not mistaken for something that's even closer to OEM, I think Ernst (German) are pretty good - a chap I knew one time had one on a Mk2 GTI and it looked totally OEM and was very quiet.
I'm not a huge fan of Bosal myself as I have found (in other cars anyway) that the quality can be hit and miss.

Best aftermarket exhaust I had on a mk2 gti 16v was a supersprint not to loud imo and very well built, don't know if they still make them.
