as title...had a tornado red 5door small bumper 8v.restored it to a decent standard and sold it. But regretted it soon after selling. Sold it to focus on my mk1 cabby build. Now I've got a bit more time and space I couldn't be without a mk2 and knew I'd buy another Someday.so I found this 3 door atlas grey small bumper gti.the car has done 197k but has 5 owners on log book, came with full m.o.t,and 30 yes 30 stamps in a genuine service book. Plan to tidy it up.but it's no rotter just a bit tired on 31yr old paint. Engine had a rebuild at 170k sounds very quiet(under the bonnet) Seats are very good for age, Original trims plastics & bumpers all unscuffed (rare) A lighter project than my last two for sure. I've still got the cabby. It's staying done lots to that. The atlas mk2 a nice addition.
Very good buy saw it a few weeks ago on ebay also nice mk1 my dad had a GLi if i can remember the reg it was GUV 698W that was the car that got me in love with the mk2 and mk1 golf. Best of luck.
Judging by the Cab and the red GTi, I'm sure the new addition will be spot on after you have got it to a standard you are happy with. Keep us posted.
So happy I've got another mk2 gti.even better it's a 3 door small bumper. And it gets better it's not a k jet it's a digifant. Do t get me wrong I like my gli k jet.but digit just seems a bit more refined Way of fuelling. When driving both they are so different.
Paint job has come out really good.one or two minor imperfections that I can live with for now but that's all.a couple of really small errors on the prep my mistake not the painters ( I did all the prep) these will be sorted next spring.
Really enjoying this thread can’t wait to see this golf back together hope to get mine sorted before summer
Keep at it your efforts will be worth it A decent looking mk2 is it a gl.1.6 or 1.8 A low miler at 91k.good find.
I have my eye on a jade green 3 door 1.6 driver so i might fix this and sell it and keep the extra money for upgrades toward the jade green one will let you know what im doing however im busy with studying so ive done small things like touch up bolts take the rear lights off and clean behind them will post some pics as ive only done one taillight so far hope your car gets sorted cant wait to see it up and running loving the build so far. Cheers.
Progress is slow now the weather's changed. My garage isn't an option too tight to work in And my mk1 cabby is in there anyway. I had my mk2 under a cheap cover.but soon discovered it was crap. I've just got the halfords all seasons cover Highly reccomend very good product and properly vented a must if your keeping a car outside during the winter.
A bit of progress with the mk2.rebuilt knackered seats with doner seats look great But had to use a passenger backrest foam and material so got a spare tilt slit but not To bothered I have a plan for that. Bumpers back on and arch trims restored and refitted used a proper texture on arches With plastic primer.come out really well. Not to many jobs to do now but the next job is gonna be a nightmare I'm sure. Remove headliner to replace sunroof seal and restic or replace headliner.
the sunroof seal is easy to do, but I don't envy you with sorting out a roof lining I've done that before not a nice job good luck
no you can easily pop the roof panel out. half open the roof, pull down on the leading edge of inner trim panel to unclip. close roof, slide inner panel back. undo the 2 cross head screws either side from the front. pull down tension spring at rear and rotate out of cotter pin thingies. undo 2 cross head screws per side at the back, push panel up and out it comes. if the height needs adjusting once complete the front is done by adjusting the big roudn disc that sits under the front mounts either side, at the back you loosen the bolt hidden inside the roof either side where the rear attachment bolts fix to
Thanks rj I was sure you would comment.im glad I don't have to drop the headlining Although still sounds a bit of a mission to do the seal. also what is the best thing for reattaching material to headlining .my only thought on is to use spray adhesive.but would need to be careful with that.
sounds worse than it is really, can have the roof out and back in less than 1/2 an hour though thats not including the time taken to do the seal. genuine VW new seals can be a pain to get on i found sometimes you got to use a hammer to get it fully seated in places take your time with it and dont go mad, brace the roof up against something soft but firm if you get me pattern part seals usually a bit softer so go on easier. make sure the join is at the side same as original and give it some lube to help it sit nicely. get the panel square in the roof and leave it shut for a good while so it beds in nicely
