Hi all ,just signed up to this forum & hoping someone will have the knowledge I need.
I’ve been looking for quite some time at a classic Golf GTI & it’s finally come available ,it’s a D reg but when I’ve checked milage on mot checker car doesn’t state it’s a GTI ?( just says VW Golf ) Is there any other way I can find out using the registration as I’m concerned if it could be a replica thanks guys

8v or 16v gti? There’s a few differences between the two.

Both will have MFA which you don’t get on anything below a GTi.

On the .gov sites (mot history and vehicle inquiry) it will only state VW Golf well it does for my GTi's it will give engine cc ie 1781 but it could still be a driver or a GL for instance as they did a carb'd 1800 engine i.e 1781 if the cc isnt that its not a genuine GTi, what about HPI check, can you check VIN and reg number through a friendly VAG dealers to check up ? Otherwise as Savagesam says does it have an MFA, rear beam has built in anti roll bar built in (you can see it from the rear of the beam) sunroof, central locking, rear discs mind you any of this could be changed just depends how far someone went with the conversion plus some other models had a sunroof and or central locking as well and some poverty spec GTi's didnt have central locking so you need to look carefully also check all trim is correct roof lining seat trim carpets etc

I did a basic car check and both of our 16v GTi’s come up as ‘Golf’. Maybe a paid one will bring the goods.

It’s the onboard computer in the clocks. You’ll also have a stalk with MFA written on it.

Central locking was rare, I don't think any mk2 gti had rear drums.
Very early ones had clocks similar to mk1, with a button poking out of the top corner of the dash, for the MFA trip meter.
No plastic trims on the sides either iirc.

GVK is on the money - my BMW (profile pic) was imported from UK and was a C Reg (Feb. '86) - difference between between 1983 and 1986 apart from anything else is Mk1 Golf ('83) and Mk2 Golf ('86)

Do you have any further details/photos of this car so that members can have a look and hopefully provide further info/clarity to help you out?

If it's a Mk1 GTI it will have vented brake discs at the front with brake shoes at the rear as standard
1781cc single cam fuel injection system - engine code is DX I think but RJ will correct or confirm this
As mentioned previously it will have the MFA in the centre of the clocks with the speedometer to the left and right respectively, manual (keep-fit) windows and of course the GTI seats with the corresponding upholstery - I know of three colours for the GTI seats (red pattern which ultimately faded to orange) there was a blue (petrol) insert and a white/silvery colour.
My '83 GTI had that petrol blue upholstery

Hard to put a price on them as there are hardly any for sale.

    How much is it?
