    All,
Just upgraded from an 89 golf 1.6 driver with 180K on the clock to a 99 bora 2.0 petrol (APK engine) with about 50K miles and full VW s/h. I am genuinely unimpressed with the engine, in my opinion it is quite lumpy and boomy between 1000 and 3000 rpm. Is this normal, Any ideas?

answered this myself, for the record; the vacuum connection between the inlet manifold and fuel pressure regulator was leaking because it was too short. It's running a lot smoother, quiter and faster now!
