Car idles and starts fine. Cuts / looses power after approx 30seconds of driving only. (interestingly it can idle for ages fine). It looses so much power - i.e. stops running, I have to find a safe place to coast to. Won't start again unless I wait a couple of minutes (up to 5). If I try to start it too early, it just turns over without sounding like it will start. If I wait long enough it starts perfectly and car runs fine for 30secs or so of journey. Over the last two years I feel I've been through the AFM, blue temp, earthing, idle switch issues...maybe one has returned... Any help much appreciated.
Might be worth looking at the throttle bodies and give them a good clean with throttle cleaner and a toothbrush- that is next for me to do on the 2023 trip to Ireland. My GTI has been really busting my nads with poor running after start and warm-up
MK2 loses Revs and cuts out???? | Club GTI This thread is remarkably similar (bar car is 16v not like my 8v), but unfortunately doesn't conclude a solution.
All I can tell you is what I have done to mine but to no avail: New spark plugs & H.T. leads (Bosch) New coil (Bosch) Complete new distributor with cap and rotor (Bosch) New genuine blue temp. sensor New fuel filter (twice) Checked main and lift pump wiring/connections Checked timing New alternator and belt (Hella) Cleaned ISV Replaced ISV with genuine second hand unit Replaced vacuum hoses Checked all earths Checked ECU connections Checked all wiring for damage and retaped Checked throttle micro-switches/wiring The only items left for me to do are throttle body cleaning and failing that the AFM - I am praying for both mine and the car's sake it is the throttlebody cleaning will sort it.
Sounds like it's not delivering fuel. When was the fuel filter last changed? Is the tank vent working? Fuel pipes all OK? Both fuel pumps sound OK?
Spot the crack Sorted with tape (for now) Cracked Vacuum Connection Brake Servo Hose - Mk2 Golf GTI 1.8 8v PB - YouTube Starring breakdown Paul. He used his magic ears and heard the whistling as I started the engine, he spotted the crack straightaway. We did a 3mile test run and all seemed good. Car had never run so well.
The next question is, what is the name of this part, and why did it cause the symptoms it did? I don't understand the time delay it needed before the car would start again.
The answer to all those question is yes they are fine. Filter is 10k old Lift pump is 5k old Main pump is original (225k old) but sounds fine However you're logic isn't bad as I had unaccounted air getting in, that is why it may have appeared I didn't have enough fuel...
I had a pressure pump with less km's than yours and it sounded fine but it didn't make enough pressure, swapped out for new and all was good ...just saying.
