Great find Its nice own a VW which has a lot of history and is known by many. And as Dan said, its lucky the engine wasn't already gone! Will keep an eye on this thread
Right guys. I have had a good old chat with Chris who put this car back together back in the day. (He's a top fella) He's kindly going to send me various photos and video footage from when he owned the car. Even photos and info about the oettinger car that provided its engine. This little mk1 is building up a nice history file. Will update with old photos soon. Cheers. Karl
Still have this car guys, tucked away in the garage. Having a few issues with a big flat spot between 3k and 4k revs but i will hopefully be pulling the engine out over Xmas to replace all the gaskets and seals, paint the engine and bay etc and give the under bonnet a good tidy. Think my flat spot is down to a suspect metering unit
Right, so I have pulled out the engine and box and made a decent start to scraping off the waxoyl from around the bay so I can start prepping it for paint, such a boring job.
As mentioned earlier in the thread, I have wanted a g60 mk1 for ages now, and here it is keeping the red one company in the garage. G60 is already in place, just need to do the plumbing and wiring and fuelling and exhaust and interior and roof and blah blah blah Will make a start on it once the red one is back in 1 piece
The bay and the front panel have had a bit of red put on them, just need to put it back together now.
So, 5 and a half years after taking the engine out, it's back under the bonnet again. Should have this car finished and running soon
The only thing that wasn't removed from the engine was the crank as it was all good before. After the refit I had a low oil pressure once up to temp and that unmistakable bottom end grumble under load when warm so out it came again. One reground crank and more new shells later and its as good as gold. I have a bit of a flat spot through the revs but I suspect that the ignition timing isn't 100%. Plan a rebuild of the metering unit next and a few trivial bits too just to give me an excuse to mess and also some more suspension as although I think the ride height is spot on on these spax ones, they are just too firm.
